TLDR: Texas was No. 1 not long ago. Now the Longhorns are 4-2, have lost 2 straight by a field goal each, and have to welcome a No. 9 Ole Miss team that just flattened a ranked opponent 31-3.

No. 7 Texas hosts No. 9 Ole Miss after 2 straight 3-point losses, the latest a 27-24 home upset by Florida that ended on an Arch Manning sack-fumble. Ole Miss has beaten Vanderbilt and No. 13 Missouri by a combined 63-20 since its own loss at Florida. Texas is a solid home favorite, but the game likely depends on whether pass rusher Colin Simmons, carted off with a left leg injury, can play and whether a Texas line missing OG T. Goosby can protect Manning.

Ole Miss Rebels
  • Ran for 200-plus yards in 31-3 rout of No. 13 Missouri
  • Defense allowed only a field goal to Missouri
  • Won 2 straight by a combined 63-20
  • Gave up 52 points at Florida
  • First trip to a top-10 road crowd this season
Texas Longhorns
  • Already beat Ohio State and won at Tennessee
  • Defense hasn't allowed more than 27 in last 5
  • Sack leader Colin Simmons carted off with left leg injury
  • OG T. Goosby out with knee, no timetable
  • Manning sacked and fumbled on the final drive vs Florida

The quarterback story is all on the Texas side. Arch Manning went 14-of-20 for 173 yards against Florida, plus a late touchdown to Cam Coleman. The box score looks fine. The game didn't. He lost a yard on a 3rd-and-1 keeper, lost yards again on the 4th-and-2 try after it, and with Texas down 3 and about 2:30 left he was sacked and fumbled, and Florida recovered. That's 2 career losses to the Gators, and both of the last 2 weeks came down to the final possession. Fair or not, Saturday, October 24 in Austin is when the conversation around Manning either resets or gets louder.

The Longhorns may be shorthanded on both lines. Colin Simmons, the national sack leader, was carted off against Florida with a left leg injury, and there was no update after the game. Offensive guard T. Goosby is out with a knee injury and has no timetable, which matters for a quarterback who couldn't get away from pressure all afternoon. Receiver D. McCutcheon is questionable with an illness. The market still makes Texas a comfortable home favorite, which tells you how much of this game rides on the Simmons news.

Ole Miss is coming in with no such questions. The Rebels opened Missouri's scoring with a 75-yard drive allowed and then gave up nothing else, beating the No. 13 Tigers 31-3 on Homecoming. Missouri was led by former Ole Miss quarterback Austin Simmons, which made it personal. Ole Miss also topped 200 rushing yards for the first time since its 2025 game against Florida. Add a 52-17 win at Vanderbilt the week before and this team has won 2 straight by a combined 63-20.

Both teams have played the same opponent, and Florida gave each of them its worst day. Ole Miss went to Gainesville and lost 52-28, by far its worst defensive game of the season. Texas got Florida at home without Gators starting quarterback Aaron Philo and still lost 27-24, with Jadan Baugh carrying 25 times for 91 yards and scoring the winning touchdown in the 4th quarter. One team lost to Florida and has since won 2 straight by big margins. The other is still dealing with that loss.

The forecast in Austin is mostly sunny and 81 degrees with an 8 mph wind, so weather won't be an excuse. The question is whether Texas can keep Manning upright without Goosby. Ole Miss just ran for 200-plus against a ranked SEC defense, and the Longhorns may not have Simmons to slow that down. Texas has beaten Ohio State and gone on the road to win at Tennessee this year, so the talent is real. It has also scored 24 or fewer points in 4 of its last 5 games, and against a top-10 opponent that's often not enough.
