TLDR: Ole Miss had a week off to stare at the 52 points Florida hung on it. Vanderbilt didn't get one. It's coming off back-to-back SEC road losses and will be playing its 6th straight Saturday when the No. 9 Rebels come to FirstBank Stadium.

No. 9 Ole Miss comes off a bye after its first loss of the season, a 52-28 beating at Florida where its run defense gave out. Vanderbilt is home after back-to-back SEC road losses in which it scored 29 points total, and it will be playing for the 6th straight Saturday. The game turns on whether Jared Curtis and the Commodores can run the ball the way Florida did, or whether the Rebels' passing game simply outscores them. No odds have been posted yet.

Ole Miss Rebels
  • Chambliss topped 300 total yards even in Florida blowout
  • Deuce Alexander: 7 catches, 134 yards at Florida
  • Extra week of rest and prep after the bye
  • Run defense gashed: Baugh 85 yards, 2 TDs by half
  • Allowed 38+ in 2 of 4 games
  • RB Lacy's shoulder status unresolved since Florida week
Vanderbilt Commodores
  • 3-0 at FirstBank, including 35-31 over NC State
  • Curtis gives the offense a real ceiling at QB
  • 29 points total in 2 SEC road losses
  • WR K. Smith out, TE Spence questionable
  • 6th straight Saturday, while Ole Miss is coming off a bye

This is a quarterback game on both sides. For Ole Miss, Trinidad Chambliss put up more than 300 yards of total offense in the Swamp even as the game got away, and Deuce Alexander caught 7 balls for 134 yards. That passing game doesn't need fixing. For Vanderbilt, it's Jared Curtis, the five-star who flipped from Georgia to Vanderbilt in December and just made his return trip to Athens as the Commodores' starter. That trip ended 38-14, and it was the 2nd straight week Vandy's offense couldn't find much on an SEC road trip.

The availability questions matter more than usual here. Ole Miss running back K. Lacy was ruled out of the Florida game with a shoulder injury, and the bye week was the obvious chance for him to get healthy. Nobody has said whether it was enough. Vanderbilt's report is thinner on bodies: wide receiver K. Smith was out for Georgia with a leg issue, and tight end C. Spence has been carrying a questionable tag with a leg injury since September. For a young quarterback who just got held to 14 points, losing 2 pass-catchers would hurt. There's no board up yet, so none of this has been priced.

The Florida loss is the part Lane Kiffin's staff spent the week on. The Gators ran right at Ole Miss, and Florida's Baugh had 85 yards and 2 touchdowns on 17 carries in the first half alone. Meanwhile the Rebels reached scoring range twice before the break, settled for field goals both times and went into halftime down 11. There was talk afterward that the defense could see personnel changes. This was also the 2nd time in 4 games the Rebels gave up 38 or more, after a 41-38 shootout with Louisville to open the season.

Vanderbilt's season has 2 halves. At home it went 3-0, though nobody got away. The 35-31 win over NC State came down to the end, and even Delaware stayed within 9. On the road against SEC teams it scored 15 at Auburn and 14 at Georgia, and the Commodores are 0-2 in league play. Coming home to Nashville helps. Getting the Rebels' passing game a week after Georgia's does not.

What decides it is whether Vanderbilt can do what Florida did: run the ball, keep Chambliss on the sideline and turn the game into a grind. If it can't, Ole Miss's offense outscores the problem the way it did against Louisville and LSU. The forecast is 80 degrees and cloudy with almost no wind, so the weather won't hold either offense back. Ole Miss had a bye to fix its run defense. Vandy has had 5 straight game weeks and spent this one in Athens. Saturday, October 10 shows whether the week off was worth it.
