TLDR: Oregon State has scored at least 33 points in each of its last 5 games and has won all 5. On Saturday, October 31, that offense goes to Fresno to face a Bulldogs team that just lost 2 straight by a combined 10 points.

Oregon State's offense has topped 33 points in each game of a 5-game win streak, led by Braden Atkinson and AJ Newberry. Fresno State has lost 2 straight one-score games and is thin at running back, with B. Ramirez out for the year and R. Luke questionable with a concussion. Fresno's best argument is a defense that held Washington State to 6 points, the same team that scored 30 on the Beavers. No lines have been posted yet.

Oregon State Beavers
  • Atkinson threw for 347 and 3 TDs vs WSU
  • Newberry: 105 rushing, 120 receiving last time out
  • Beat common opponent SDSU 66-14
  • Freshman QB in his 1st start ran for 136 on them
  • Gave up 30 to a WSU team Fresno held to 6
Fresno State Bulldogs
  • Held Washington State to 6 points on the road
  • Both losses one-score games vs Boise, SDSU
  • Ramirez out for the year, Luke questionable with a concussion
  • Mandal held to 141 passing yards at SDSU
  • Missed PAT, late FG decided SDSU loss

The quarterbacks tell you most of what you need to know. Braden Atkinson threw for 347 yards and 3 touchdowns in the 48-30 win over Washington State, and the Beavers led 27-10 at the half. AJ Newberry ran for 105 yards on 11 carries and caught 5 balls for 120 more. Jesse Legree had 8 catches for 108 yards and 2 scores. On the other side, Jayden Mandal went 13-of-25 for 141 yards in Fresno State's 26-23 loss at San Diego State. Fresno can win games, but it hasn't been winning them through the air.

The bigger problem for Fresno is the backfield. B. Ramirez is out for the season with an undisclosed injury, and R. Luke has been listed as questionable with a concussion. That left Bryson Donelson as the lead back against the Aztecs, with 62 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. There's still nothing on the board for this one, so the market has 2 weeks to work out how much of that backfield shows up.

These 2 teams have played 2 of the same opponents, and the comparison isn't close. Oregon State beat San Diego State 66-14 at home. Fresno State lost to the same Aztecs by 3 on the road. The Washington State results point the other way, though. Fresno held the Cougars to 6 points in a road win, while Oregon State gave up 30 to them at home. So the Bulldogs' defense has a real argument. Whether it holds up against this offense is the question for October 31.

Fresno's 2 straight losses were both one-score games. Boise State won 38-31 in Fresno, and San Diego State won it on a 53-yard field goal from C. DiLeva with 57 seconds left. A missed extra point after J. Gillick's 2-yard touchdown with 5:02 to go meant the Bulldogs could only tie on that last drive, not win it. That's 1-2 in league play for a team that started 3-0 over its 5-game window.

Oregon State isn't perfect either. Washington State started redshirt freshman Owen Eshelman, who threw for 289 yards and ran for 136 more on 15 carries in his first career start. That's a lot of yards to give up to a quarterback with no film. The Beavers won by 18 anyway, because Atkinson and Jake Reichle, who added 2 rushing touchdowns, kept scoring. But a defense that a first-time starter ran around isn't a sure thing in a road environment.

Neither team has a game on its schedule before this one, so both get the extra time to heal and prepare. Oregon State is 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference, and it can keep pulling away from the league. Fresno State is 4-3 and needs to stop a slide before it turns into a lost season. Luke's status will be the injury story to watch over the next 2 weeks.
