Houston enters 2026 as a legit Big 12 contender. Oregon State enters it as a program trying to remember what a full roster looks like.

Houston returns a proven, healthier quarterback and a program with real continuity, while Oregon State is breaking in a new coach and a roster that turned over almost entirely. That gap in stability alone makes the Cougars the easy side to trust to just win the game outright.

Oregon State
  • Linebacker corps returns Aiden Sullivan, 72 tackles
  • Portal brought in 37 new additions to retool
  • 35 players left via transfer portal this offseason
  • First-year head coach with no continuity
  • Offensive line and defensive line both unproven
Houston
  • Weigman returns after 2,700 yards, 25 TDs season
  • Healthiest offseason of Weigman's career per Fritz
  • Finished 10-3, ranked No. 22 last year
  • Week 1 openers can carry early rust
  • Big 12 title expectations bring real pressure

This is about as lopsided a season opener as you'll find on paper. Houston went 10-3 and finished ranked No. 22 last year under Willie Fritz, and it kept the engine running by bringing quarterback Conner Weigman back for another go. Oregon State shows up on the other sideline with a first-time head coach, a defense and offensive line that both need real answers, and a roster that turned over almost entirely this offseason.

Weigman's return is the headline for Houston. He threw for over 2,700 yards with 25 touchdowns against just 9 picks last season and added 700 rushing yards and 11 more scores on the ground, and Fritz says this is the healthiest offseason of Weigman's career — full go from January through spring ball, with noticeably more arm strength behind it. Houston also has five-star phenom Keisean Henderson waiting in the wings, which tells you everything about the kind of quarterback room Fritz has built heading into a Big 12 title push.

Oregon State's rebuild is the real story here, not the betting market. New coach JaMarcus Shephard watched 35 players walk into the transfer portal and had to replace them with 37 incoming additions, which is about as close to starting from scratch as a program can get. Maalik Murphy takes over at quarterback after the Beavers burned through three different starters last year, and while the linebacking corps — anchored by Aiden Sullivan's 72 tackles — looks like a strength, the offensive line and defensive front are both question marks Shephard hasn't had time to fully address.

The bigger issue for Oregon State is that this game comes on the road, in Houston, against a roster with far more continuity and a proven quarterback who's been on campus long enough to know exactly what Fritz wants from him. New coaches and rebuilt rosters need reps to gel, and there's no gentler way to find out where the holes are than a Week 1 trip into a ranked, returning Big 12 team's building.

Houston's depth additions in the transfer portal focused on the lines and secondary, which matters against an Oregon State offense that's still figuring out its identity under a new staff. If the Cougars' front seven can get after Murphy early and force him into mistakes, this could get out of hand fast. For Oregon State, the path to making it competitive runs through that linebacker group holding up and Murphy avoiding the kind of turnovers that plagued the position a year ago.
