Both sidelines look different than they did last fall. Penn State fired Franklin in October 2025 after a three-game skid that included a loss to Northwestern, then hired Matt Campbell away from Iowa State to rebuild the program from scratch. Campbell brought quarterback Rocco Becht with him — the first transfer QB to start for Penn State in program history — and Becht is coming off offseason shoulder surgery that limited his spring reps. Northwestern kept David Braun as head coach but swapped in Chip Kelly at offensive coordinator, and Kelly's new starter is Aidan Chiles, a Michigan State transfer with around 20 games of Big Ten starting experience under his belt.
Both rosters turned over hard this offseason, just in different ways. Penn State brought in more than 55 new players, over half its roster, with roughly two dozen following Campbell from Ames. Northwestern went the other direction — only 8 players left via the portal, the fewest since 2022 — but it still lost both starting edge rushers, Anto Saka and Aidan Hubbard, without adding a receiver to a room that was inconsistent behind Griffin Wilde a year ago. That's the trade-off: Penn State has more overall talent and a proven winner running the show, Northwestern has continuity and buy-in but real personnel gaps up front.

The venue is the real story here regardless of how either roster shakes out. Northwestern played its first two home dates of 2026 at a temporary stadium while Ryan Field finished construction, which makes Penn State the first true opponent to walk into the new building — coincidentally 100 years to the day since the original Dyche Stadium hosted its first game in 1926. The new Ryan Field seats a Big Ten-smallest 35,000 with a seating canopy built specifically to trap crowd noise, so whatever this Wildcats team lacks in win-total expectations, it won't lack in atmosphere for this one.

This is exactly the kind of early-season game that tells you more about a program's floor than its ceiling. Penn State has the deeper roster and the pedigreed hire, but Becht is walking into a new building behind a shoulder that just got surgically repaired, in an offense that's still installing. Northwestern has the shakier long-term outlook but the extra juice of a home crowd seeing its new stadium for the first time and a quarterback who's actually started Big Ten games before. Neither team is walking in fully comfortable with who they are yet, and that unpredictability is the whole draw.
