Penn State shows up in Philadelphia for Matt Campbell's second game as head coach, and the guy lining up across from him for Temple used to wear blue and white.

Penn State brings a proven head coach and a genuinely experienced quarterback into a building rebuild, while Temple is still sorting out who even starts at QB. The talent and continuity gap favors the Nittany Lions clearly, even this early in a new era. Smolik's revenge angle makes it a fun storyline, not a real threat to the favorite.

Penn State
  • Hired proven program-builder Matt Campbell in December
  • Added 39-start veteran QB Rocco Becht via transfer
  • Owns dominant 40-4-1 all-time series lead
  • First-year staff overhaul creates real uncertainty
  • Lost 24 signees during the coaching search
  • Only Campbell's 2nd game as head coach
Temple
  • Keeler's Temple sat 5-3 through November 2025
  • Ex-Penn State QB Smolik adds revenge storyline
  • Program has history of upsetting bigger favorites
  • Lost final 4 games of 2025, missed a bowl
  • QB battle still unsettled heading into fall camp
  • Facing a talent gap even with a new coach

This one's less about the scoreboard history and more about who's under center. Penn State handed the keys to Rocco Becht, who made 39 straight starts at Iowa State before following Campbell east — as steady a hand as any transfer quarterback in the country. Temple, meanwhile, is still sorting out its own room, with Penn State castoff Jaxon Smolik in a 3-way battle to be the guy by the time September rolls around.

That QB subplot is the whole story here. Smolik left Penn State and landed in Philly, and now he could be lining up against his old program in just his first year at the new one. Temple's defense showed real fight for most of 2025 under first-year coach K.C. Keeler before the wheels came off late, dropping its final 4 games of the season. If Smolik wins the job, this game carries a little extra juice for a Temple fanbase starving for one.

None of that changes the shape of the roster gap. Penn State fired James Franklin mid-season in 2025 after a stunning collapse, then went out and landed Campbell, a coach who won consistently at Iowa State for a decade. The staff turnover cost Penn State some 2026 signees who bailed during the coaching search, but the on-field talent and the Becht pickup still make this a lopsided matchup on paper.

Keeler's first Temple team actually sat at 5-3 through November before the fade, proof there's a real foundation being built even if the finish stung. This is only Campbell's second game running Penn State, though, and new staffs on the road in September have been known to look shaky before they look sharp. Temple's had upset magic before against bigger programs, and playing this one at Lincoln Financial Field instead of a true road atmosphere for Penn State only helps close the gap a little.

Penn State still leads this series 40-4-1 and hasn't lost to Temple since long before either current staff was in place. That history means little with two new coaches and a pile of new faces on both sidelines, but it's a reminder of just how rare it is for Temple to actually pull this off. Whatever happens, Saturday, September 12 doubles as an early referendum on how fast Campbell can get Penn State's new pieces playing like a unit.
