This is the first year of the Matt Campbell era in Happy Valley, and it's a genuine reboot. Penn State fired James Franklin in October 2025 after an 0-3 start in Big Ten play, then hired Campbell off a 72-55 decade at Iowa State, where he turned a moribund program into a seven-bowl outfit. He brought a chunk of that roster with him — only about 27 of 85 scholarship players are Franklin-era holdovers, with Iowa State transfer Rocco Becht, a 39-game starter with 26 wins, installed at quarterback. It's as much of a program transplant as college football sees, and a night trip to the Pacific Northwest in year one is a real test of how fast it's gelled.
Washington enters with more continuity, even if the roster around Demond Williams Jr. looks different. The Huskies lost seven players to the NFL draft plus leading rusher Jonah Coleman and leading receiver Denzel Boston to the portal, so Fisch has retooled the skill groups around his quarterback. Williams himself had an offseason scare — he briefly entered the transfer portal in January despite a reported $4 million deal to stay, then walked it back within days and recommitted to Washington. He's back projected as one of the Big Ten's most dangerous quarterbacks after throwing for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2025, the same season he became the first Husky ever to throw for 400 and rush for 100 in a single game.
