Matt Campbell's first training camp at Penn State ended without the quarterback drama a new staff usually invites. "I hate to use the word flawless, but he's played at an elite clip every day," Campbell said of senior Rocco Becht, who followed him east from Iowa State, per State College. Becht described offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser's scheme as "an aggressive offense" who "is not gonna go out there and call a game scared," and Mouser has handed him full control to change plays at the line, wanting his quarterback to "play fast," per On3.
The offensive line settled this week too. Redshirt freshman Malachi Goodman won the left tackle job, and Campbell filled out the rest of the group with transfers Trevor Buhr and Brock Riker at left guard and center, plus Cooper Cousins and Anthony Donkoh at right guard and tackle, per Onward State. Campbell singled out Cousins for an offseason transformation, calling him "physically as dominant as I've seen him" after "an unbelievable camp."
The program made its opener a little more personal this week. Penn State named former Nittany Lion kicker Robbie Gould the honorary captain for game one, and separately announced it will honor the life of longtime team physician Dr. Wayne J. Sebastianelli with a helmet sticker and a moment of silence before kickoff — a program tying a brand-new era to names the fan base already knows.
Last season ended on a four-game run, and it's still the only form on this roster
Whatever happens on September 5, the most recent form anyone can point to on this roster is how last season ended. Penn State lost to Indiana, 27-24, in late October, then closed out last season by winning four straight — a 28-10 win at Michigan State, a 37-10 win over Nebraska, a wild 40-36 escape at Rutgers, and a 22-10 win at Clemson on December 27 to finish the year.
That finishing kick belonged to an entirely different coaching staff, but it's still the tape this program carries into a new era — proof last season's group could win ugly on the road at Rutgers and win comfortably on the road at Clemson in the same month. Whether any of that carries over under Campbell is exactly what September 5 is going to start answering.

This is only the third meeting ever between the two programs, and Marshall brings a legitimate problem at quarterback in Carlos Del Rio-Wilson. He was named the Sun Belt's preseason Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 2,043 yards and 17 touchdowns against 5 interceptions while setting Marshall's single-season quarterback rushing record with 660 yards, and he's the only Sun Belt player on the 2026 Davey O'Brien Award Watch List, per Black Shoe Diaries. Coach Tony Gibson has done his homework on the team across from him: "We've watched a ton of Iowa State tape and there's 25 of their guys who followed coach Campbell to Penn State, especially on offense."
It's a bounce-back trip for Marshall in more ways than one. The Herd dropped from 10-3 in 2024 to 5-7 last season under second-year coach Gibson, and Saturday's visit to Beaver Stadium is their only Big Ten opponent on the entire 2026 schedule, per 247Sports. Gibson, who called his only previous trip to Beaver Stadium as a Michigan assistant back in 2010 "not a very good experience," made clear he wants a different result out of this opener than last year's: "I don't want a repeat of what happened last year."
Health is the one open question on Penn State's side. Per Covers' aggregated injury tracker, tight end G. Burkle is dealing with a knee injury and is doubtful for the opener, while receiver K. Brookins is listed as questionable for personal reasons, first reported last week, with it genuinely uncertain whether he plays. Neither is a name Penn State can't work around, but both are worth watching during warm-ups on Saturday.
A 24.5-point number says this is about answers, not a scoreboard
The board opened Penn State -24.5 with the total set at 54.5 for the Marshall visit, a number that says this line is about program identity, not suspense. That gap is less about Marshall's floor and more about how little is known about the team on the other sideline — this is the first time Campbell's staff, Becht and a rebuilt offensive line all take a live snap together in front of 100,000-plus.
