Pitt's whole season runs through Mason Heintschel, the sophomore who took over the job midway through 2025 and never let go. He threw for 2,354 yards and 16 touchdowns once he settled in, torching NC State for 423 yards and topping 300 four times in his first five starts. Boston College counters with a total reset: Dylan Lonergan is gone to Rutgers, and Saginaw Valley State transfer Mason McKenzie — a Division II Player of the Year who ran for nearly 1,000 yards and threw for over 2,000 last season — is the current front-runner over Arkansas transfer Grayson Wilson.
The gap isn't just at quarterback. Boston College allowed 32.8 points per game in 2025, 123rd nationally, and that defense returns without much reason for optimism heading into a new year. Bill O'Brien deserves credit for squeezing production out of receiver Lewis Bond, who broke BC's all-time receptions record, and safety KP Price, whose 5.4 solo tackles per game ranked third in the country. But building a competitive program back up from 1-7 in conference play is a multi-year job, not a one-offseason fix.
