This is Franklin's first home game as Virginia Tech's coach, and the whole night runs through quarterback play. Ethan Grunkemeyer followed him from Penn State after an injury forced him into the lineup late last season, and he closed that audition with 777 yards, 7 touchdowns and zero interceptions over his final 4 starts. Across the field, Pitt counters with Mason Heintschel, the sophomore who won the starting job by his fourth career start and threw for 400 yards against NC State — the first Pitt quarterback to hit that number since Kenny Pickett in 2021.
Both defenses are leaning on some returning production while breaking in new pieces around it. Pitt brought in Harlon Barnett and Joe Bowen to coach the secondary and linebackers, but the production is still there up front with Braylon Lovelace, Jimmy Scott and Cameron Lindsey all back after combining for real pressure a year ago. Virginia Tech went the transfer-portal route on the defensive line, adding names like Javion Hilson while leaning on Kemari Copeland as the one proven veteran anchoring the middle.

None of that offseason work matters if the Hokies can't find their footing in year one under a new staff. Virginia Tech was 0-3 with no answers when Brent Pry got fired last September, and Franklin's arrival — backed by a reported $20 million gift and the program's new 'Invest to Win' push — is supposed to fix that in a hurry. It won't happen overnight, but a Friday night ACC opener in front of a home crowd is as good a proving ground as any.
Pitt, meanwhile, is the more finished product walking in. The Panthers closed 2025 by winning 3 of their final 5 games, a sharp reversal from the 5-game skid that ended the year before, even if a 21-point home loss to Miami in the finale was a reminder the ceiling still has room to grow.
