Purdue hands the offense back to Ryan Browne, who gets a full season as the guy after winning the job last year and taking his lumps in Josh Henson's system. Both rosters look different than they did a year ago. Purdue leaned hard into the portal, building a top-25 transfer class and beefing up both lines after two years of getting physically beaten in Big Ten play. That roster churn is exactly why this game is trickier than the name recognition suggests. Illinois is the more talented team on paper and the one still building something, but new pieces at quarterback, offensive line and defensive coordinator all have to click at once. Purdue is rebuilding from the bottom up and still hasn't cracked the win column in conference play in more than two years.

The skill-position gap is where Illinois should feel best about its chances. Running backs Ca'Lil Valentine and Aidan Laughery are both back, and receivers Hudson Clement and Collin Dixon give Houser proven targets from day one — the kind of continuity Purdue simply doesn't have around Browne.
