Odom still hasn't named a backup quarterback hours before Purdue's opener
Ryan Browne keeps the armband, but Barry Odom heads into the Indiana State opener without a QB2, an athletic director still needling Indiana, and a linebacker room getting healthier by the day.

Purdue closed camp without settling the backup quarterback job. This week the program posted its full 2026 captains list on the BoilerFootball account — Ryan Browne, receiver De'Nylon Morrissette and offensive lineman Jude McCoskey on offense, linebacker Charles Correa, cornerback Hudauri Hines and defensive tackle Curt Neal on defense — with a simple "Our 2026 captains 🫡" caption. Browne getting the armband for a second straight year was the easy call; he threw for 2,153 yards and 9 touchdowns on 12 starts last season, and nobody in the quarterback room challenged him for the job.
What Odom hasn't settled is QB2, and he said so out loud. Asked in fall camp whether anyone had separated themselves as the backup, he paused for a few moments before answering, "I don't know. We've got a lot of work to do." Sophomore Evans Chuba, a Washington State transfer who has yet to take a college snap, has spent camp in a genuine fight with true freshman Corin Berry, a 3-star prospect who was ranked the No. 52 quarterback in his signing class; Bennett Meredith and the head coach's own son, redshirt Garyt Odom, remain further down the depth chart.
Odom got through his pregame press conference without naming a winner, which means whoever gets the call tonight against Indiana State makes his Purdue debut with, at best, a handful of fall scrimmage snaps to lean on.
56-3 still shadows a new era in West Lafayette
Purdue closed last season the way most of it went: Indiana 56, Purdue 3, in West Lafayette on November 29 — the fifth straight loss in a stretch that also ran through Rutgers, Michigan, Ohio State and Washington. None of those five were competitive down the stretch, the Indiana game least of all; it was the low point of Odom's first year on the job, full stop. Purdue finished 2-10 last season, and that loss extended what is now a 10-game losing streak carried into tonight's opener, per Yahoo Sports.
It's also, apparently, still fresh enough to build an introduction around. New athletic director Tommy McClelland, hired this month after 18 years running departments at Rice, Louisiana Tech and McNeese, opened with a direct shot across the state line: "Every recruit, every current student athlete will hear this message repeatedly. We are here to win championships. If you don't want to win championships, go to Indiana," he said, per CFBKings. Odom took the gentler road at Big Ten Media Days, saying Indiana's turnaround under Curt Cignetti "should give every player, every coach, every fan base hope, vision and belief that it can happen" — before noting the Hoosiers' formula isn't one every program can copy. Brett McMurphy needed four words for the rematch already on the calendar: "Godspeed Purdue on Nov. 28 in Bloomington."
Speca and Bradford are trending back; Fox still isn't
Barry Odom's health update did more for this storyline than his depth chart did for the quarterback job. Linebacker Anthony Speca, the Penn State transfer whose absence had thinned Purdue's linebacker room down to 9 scholarship players, and defensive back Smiley Bradford, who had stepped away for what Odom called "a personal matter," are both trending back with kickoff hours away. Asked directly about the injury picture, Odom kept it short: "You guys have done plenty on injuries; I'd rather not disclose any of that. We don't have to put an injury report out this week. I would expect us all except [tight end] Kylan Fox and [defensive back] Raderrion Daniels to be active."
That's a clean recovery from where camp health stood a few days ago, when both defensive starters looked like game-time question marks. Fox is the one absence Purdue is willing to detail: Covers' aggregated injury table lists him Out with a knee injury and no return timetable, and nothing Odom said this week moved him off that — the tight end room plays the opener without him. Daniels' absence is new information straight from Odom's own press conference rather than the injury log, so it's worth treating as exactly what the coach said and nothing more: he's out, no further detail given.
Purdue is a heavy favorite over a Sycamores team that's already 0-1
Tonight vs. Indiana State is Purdue's actual first evidence of anything — captains, quarterback battle and injury report all get tested at once. The line opened at Purdue -35.5, with the total set at 56.5, and there's no mystery why: Indiana State is 0-1 after a 21-23 loss to Southeast Missouri State in its opener, and the Sycamores haven't beaten an FBS opponent since 2014.
Indiana State's season still runs through quarterback Elijah Owens, a dual-threat redshirt junior who rushed for 645 yards in 2024 before a collarbone injury cost him 8 games last year. He looked like himself again in the SEMO loss, throwing for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns, and his coach, Curt Mallory, has said the offense wants to spread the field and get the ball in Owens' hands in space, per SI.com's Purdue beat. The bigger problem for the Sycamores is the other side of the ball — they finished last in their conference in points allowed a season ago — which is exactly the kind of matchup a Purdue program starving for a clean answer at any position needed to open with.
