East Carolina is coming off a 9-win season and a bowl trophy, but almost none of the guys who got them there are walking through the door this fall.

East Carolina returns fewer starters than almost anyone in the league, but the roster talent and coaching pedigree still outstrip a Rice team that hasn't had a winning season since 2014. Backing the Pirates at home is the safer read until Rice's option offense proves it can hang with a rebuilt but more talented roster.

Rice
  • Quinton Jackson back, chasing first 1,000-yard season
  • Jacurri Brown fits Rice's option scheme well
  • Year two under Scott Abell, more continuity
  • Still chasing first winning season since 2014
  • Lost all four players with 2.5+ sacks
  • 5-8 last season, unproven against improved AAC foes
East Carolina
  • 9-4 in 2025, won Military Bowl over Pitt
  • New OC Jordan Davis ran No. 1 scoring offense in FBS
  • Program culture and depth under Blake Harrell
  • Losing 21 starters off last year's team
  • Entire starting offensive line must be replaced
  • Lost starting QB, top tackler, and top receiver

East Carolina finished 9-4 last year, capped it with a 23-17 Military Bowl win over Pitt, and now has to replace 21 starters off that team. The quarterback who ran the show is gone to the Big Ten, the leading tackler left for Georgia, and the top receiver is already in the NFL. Head coach Blake Harrell brought in Jordan Davis, who ran the No. 1 scoring offense in the country at North Texas last year, to rebuild the attack from scratch, and the QB job is expected to come down to transfers Mitch Griffis and Emory Williams.

Rice is still chasing its first winning season since 2014, and Scott Abell is heading into year two after a 5-8 debut. The Owls handed the keys to UCF transfer Jacurri Brown, a dual-threat quarterback who fits Rice's run-heavy option scheme, and running back Quinton Jackson is back for a fourth season chasing his first 1,000-yard year after piling up a career-high 889 yards in 2025. The defense has to replace all four players who had at least 2.5 sacks last season, led by Tony Anyanwu's team-high 6.5, which is the bigger question mark heading into the fall.

Both programs are leaning on new coordinators and new quarterbacks to define who they are this season, which makes an early AAC road trip to Greenville a tough gauge for either side. ECU's staff overhaul is the more ambitious swing — turning over both coordinator spots and an entire starting offensive line is a lot to ask in one offseason, even with a program that's trending up.

ECU's calling card the last two years has been Harrell's culture and depth, and the program believes that carries them through the turnover better than a typical rebuild. Rice's path is more straightforward: run the ball with Jackson, let Brown operate the option, and hope a defense that finished thin on the pass rush in 2025 has actually improved. Watch the trenches early — ECU replacing its whole offensive line against a Rice front trying to generate more pressure is the matchup inside the matchup.

This is a Week 6-ish AAC tilt between two teams still figuring out their identity, not a marquee clash, but it'll tell us a lot about which rebuild is further along. If ECU's new pieces gel the way the coaching staff hopes, this is the kind of game a conference-title contender is supposed to win comfortably. If not, Rice's ground game and defensive uncertainty make it a lot closer than East Carolina's record last year would suggest.
