Rice's season has gone the other way. The Owls opened with a 31-3 win over Houston Christian, got shut out 52-0 at Notre Dame, and have stayed close ever since: a 7-point loss to Western Michigan, 14 at Fresno State, and 2 against a UTSA team now 4-1. The defense held the Roadrunners to 16 points. The offense is the problem. After a first-quarter touchdown against UTSA, Rice didn't score again until the fourth.
Houston Christian31-3
North Carolina Central42-9That's the shape of this matchup. ECU's best offensive day came against a defense that gave up 42 points by halftime, and Rice's best defensive work has come against FBS offenses that still won. If the Owls muddy it up the way they did against UTSA, Williams has to beat a defense that's been keeping games tight. If the Pirates get out in front early, Rice's 21-, 24- and 14-point outputs over the last 3 weeks won't be enough to come back.
Availability is still uncertain on both sides. ECU receiver J. Melvin was ruled out of the N.C. Central game with a back injury, and Rice tight end P. Zinter has been listed questionable with a leg injury since mid-September. Both are worth checking again before kickoff. Expect a warm, cloudy afternoon in Greenville, around 77 degrees with an 11 mph wind and a low chance of rain, so weather shouldn't decide anything.
East Carolina gets a chance to start league play with a home win and a 3-game winning streak. Rice needs to find the offense from the Houston Christian opener, or the close losses will keep piling up.
