TLDR: Florida Atlantic just got run over at West Point and comes home to a Rice team that hasn't won a game since mid-September. On paper this is the bounce-back spot for Boca. The question is how much the Army film carries over.

Florida Atlantic (4-2) comes home after a 56-24 loss at Army that was all about stopping the run, and it hosts a Rice team (1-6) that has lost 5 straight and hasn't topped 24 points during the skid. Caden Veltkamp's passing game against a Rice offense down a tight end decides it, and a windy, damp early forecast is the variable to watch. No odds have posted yet.

Rice Owls
  • Played UTSA within 2 points, 16-14
  • FAU defense just allowed 479 rushing yards
  • Lost 5 straight, 0-3 in conference play
  • 12, 14, 17 points in 3 of last 4
  • TE Cole out for season, Zinter hobbled
Florida Atlantic Owls
  • Veltkamp threw for 318 and 3 TDs at Army
  • Unbeaten at home this season
  • Messer a high-volume target, 14 catches last out

Start with the Florida Atlantic passing game, because that's what this matchup runs through. Even in a 56-24 beating at Army, Caden Veltkamp went 33-of-48 for 318 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Easton Messer caught 14 balls for 102 yards and a score. That came while Army held the ball for 10 more minutes than FAU did. The air raid kept working. The Owls just never got enough possessions to match the other side's scoring.

Rice is the other end of that problem. The Owls from Houston have scored 21, 24, 14, 12 and 17 during a 5-game losing streak. They sit 1-6 and 0-3 in the American as of this weekend, and they just took a 38-17 loss to Tulsa at home. The tight end room is thin too: C. Cole is expected to miss the rest of the season, and P. Zinter has been nursing a leg injury since September. There's no board posted for this one yet, so the market hasn't weighed in.

For FAU, the worry is the defense. Army scored touchdowns on its first 7 possessions and ran for 479 yards on 60 carries, with quarterback Cale Hellums alone putting up 195 yards and 5 scores. That's an ugly tape, but it came against the nation's leading ground game and a triple-option look that Rice doesn't run. How much it tells you about this week depends on whether that was a scheme problem or a tackling problem.

FAU's 4-2 start is a little softer than it looks. The best win is 38-30 over Navy, and the 66-10 result came against FCS Texas Southern. Still, home has been good to Boca this year. They're unbeaten at Flagler Credit Union Stadium, with wins over Navy, Florida International and Texas Southern. Rice's lone win came before this skid started, and the narrowest of the 5 losses was a 16-14 game against UTSA.

Saturday, October 24 is an early-window game in Boca, and the early forecast calls for light drizzle, 79 degrees and wind around 21 mph. That's a week out and will change, but if the wind holds it matters more for a team throwing 48 times a game than for one grinding it out. Either way, FAU has an easy job on paper: get back to slinging it against a defense that just gave up 38 at home and keep the drives short.
