For a Rutgers team that missed a bowl game at 5-7 and enters a make-or-break year for its head coach, leaning on that returning production early is the whole plan.
Boston College's floor, meanwhile, is the story of the whole season. The Eagles finished 2-10 last year, by most accounts the worst power-conference team in the country, and Bill O'Brien responded by gutting the roster — a wave of offensive line additions from the portal, a new backfield, and now a new quarterback room built almost entirely from outside recruiting. There's nowhere to go but up, and a Friday night Red Bandanna Game in front of a home crowd honoring Welles Crowther is as good a spot as any to start proving it.
Rutgers leads the all-time series 20-7-1 and won the last meeting in 2022, but this one carries more emotional weight than history. BC gets a jolt from the setting and the moment; Rutgers gets a quarterback trying to beat the program that developed him. Both teams are opening fresh chapters, and this game will say a lot about how fast either one is actually turning the corner.
