Boston College's home opener isn't just the Red Bandanna Game — it's Dylan Lonergan's first trip back to Chestnut Hill wearing the wrong colors.

Rutgers brings back a proven 1-2 punch in Antwan Raymond and KJ Duff, while Boston College is trusting a first-time Division I starter behind a rebuilt line. That gap in returning production is the whole case for backing the Scarlet Knights to win outright, emotional home opener or not.

Rutgers
  • Antwan Raymond returns after 1,241 rushing yards, 13 TDs
  • KJ Duff back after 1,084 receiving yards, 7 TDs
  • More established roster and staff continuity under Schiano
  • Missed a bowl game last year at 5-7
  • Unsettled QB battle between Surace and Lonergan
  • Lost CB Bo Mascoe and two top receivers to the portal
Boston College
  • Nowhere to go but up after a 2-10 season
  • Bill O'Brien overhauled the offensive line via the portal
  • Red Bandanna Game gives BC a genuine emotional and crowd edge
  • Considered the worst Power Four team in the country last year
  • Incoming QB Mason McKenzie has zero D1 snaps
  • Backfield and receiving corps almost entirely new

Lonergan started for BC last season before hitting the portal and landing at Rutgers, and now he's set to face the roster and coaching staff he spent a year with, assuming he wins the summer quarterback battle with AJ Surace in Piscataway. Either way, this is the first real look at what a post-Lonergan Boston College offense looks like, and it's happening on the same field he used to run.

Whoever lines up under center for Rutgers, the more pressing question is whether Boston College's rebuilt offensive line can hold up. The Eagles are turning to Saginaw Valley State transfer Mason McKenzie, a dual-threat who won GLIAC Player of the Year honors after throwing for over 2,000 yards and rushing for 1,000 more — but has zero snaps of Division I football on his resume. Rutgers, by comparison, opens as the more established roster, and that experience gap is a big reason they'll likely be favored on the road.

Rutgers isn't walking in with nothing to prove, either. Antwan Raymond ran for 1,241 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, and KJ Duff caught 60 balls for 1,084 yards and 7 scores — both are back, and both give Schiano's offense a floor that Boston College simply doesn't have right now. For a Rutgers team that missed a bowl game at 5-7 and enters a make-or-break year for its head coach, leaning on that returning production early is the whole plan.

Boston College's floor, meanwhile, is the story of the whole season. The Eagles finished 2-10 last year, by most accounts the worst power-conference team in the country, and Bill O'Brien responded by gutting the roster — a wave of offensive line additions from the portal, a new backfield, and now a new quarterback room built almost entirely from outside recruiting. There's nowhere to go but up, and a Friday night Red Bandanna Game in front of a home crowd honoring Welles Crowther is as good a spot as any to start proving it.

Rutgers leads the all-time series 20-7-1 and won the last meeting in 2022, but this one carries more emotional weight than history. BC gets a jolt from the setting and the moment; Rutgers gets a quarterback trying to beat the program that developed him. Both teams are opening fresh chapters, and this game will say a lot about how fast either one is actually turning the corner.
