Wisconsin gets the nod here mostly on the strength of a home crowd and a genuinely retooled roster — 33 transfers and one of the biggest recruiting hauls in program history isn't nothing. The linebacker corps led by Mason Posa and Cooper Catalano gives the Badgers a legitimate defensive identity, something Rutgers is still trying to rebuild from scratch after last year's collapse on that side of the ball.

Rutgers hands the offense to Dylan Lonergan, the Boston College transfer who threw for 2,029 yards, 12 touchdowns and just 5 picks last season before landing in Piscataway. Wisconsin's answer at quarterback has been murkier — reports out of camp have Colton Joseph penciled in as QB1, though after a carousel of injuries and benchings at the position in 2025, nothing there is proven until it happens on turf in November.
The bigger swing factor might be up front on defense. Rutgers finished 127th nationally on that side of the ball a year ago and brought in new coordinator Travis Johansen along with a wave of transfer help to fix it. Wisconsin isn't much further along — the Badgers return just 1 defensive starter from Week 1 of last season — but they've leaned hard into the linebacker room, with Mason Posa and Cooper Catalano tabbed as potential All-Big Ten pieces. Whichever retooled defense holds up better under Friday-night lights probably decides how ugly or clean this one looks.

Greg Schiano is in his 18th season in Piscataway and has heard the tougher-schedule, needs-improvement conversation before, but Luke Fickell is the one squarely on the hot seat — Year 4 in Madison is being framed around here as make-or-break, and a bad look on national TV doesn't help his case.
