Auburn closes out the home slate against an FCS team that just went 1-11. This one's about Auburn proving something to itself, not about Samford having a puncher's chance.

Auburn is the overwhelming pick here on name value and talent alone, especially with Golesh restocking the roster through the portal with players he already trusts. Samford is a full division down and coming off a 1-11 season, which is about as steep a gap as college football offers. There's no scenario here where backing the road FCS side outright makes sense.

Samford
  • New coach John Grass has a strong FCS track record
  • Fresh system installed over the offseason
  • Coming off a 1-11 season in 2025
  • Massive class gap against SEC-level Auburn roster
Auburn
  • Byrum Brown brings existing chemistry with Golesh
  • Jeremiah Cobb returns as a proven workhorse back
  • Roster returns almost no starters from 2025
  • First-year staff still building continuity

This is the kind of game a rebuilding staff schedules on purpose. Alex Golesh took over on the Plains this offseason and gutted the roster through the portal, bringing over a wave of former South Florida pieces including QB Byrum Brown, who threw for over 3,000 yards and 28 touchdowns in Tampa last season. Auburn returns almost nobody from its 2025 two-deep outside of running back Jeremiah Cobb, so a November tune-up against an FCS bottom-feeder is exactly the kind of low-stakes rep this offense needs before the calendar flips toward bigger tests.

Samford, meanwhile, is starting over from scratch under John Grass, who was hired in December after a strong run at Jacksonville State. He inherits a program that finished 1-11 overall and 1-7 in SoCon play a season ago, so this trip to Auburn is less about the scoreboard and more about seeing where a roster in transition actually stands against SEC-caliber talent. Games like this one are circled by Power 4 staffs for a reason, and Samford's rebuild timeline makes it an especially convenient date on the schedule.

Golesh has talked up Brown's command of the offense this summer, saying he's seeing a confident version of his quarterback heading into year one on the Plains. That kind of continuity matters when a staff is otherwise starting from scratch — Brown and Golesh already have chemistry built from their time together at USF, and Cobb gives Auburn a proven workhorse to lean on behind him. Whatever early-season versions of these teams show up, this particular matchup is set up to be lopsided on paper long before kickoff.

The roster overhaul cuts both ways for Auburn. Bringing in over 30 new scholarship players gives Golesh talent and flexibility, but it also means less continuity and more moving pieces than a typical late-season game usually has. Samford's rebuild is even more pronounced — Grass is installing a new system and identity in Homewood, and games against programs at Auburn's level are as much about evaluation as competition at this point in his tenure.

By the time Samford's Saturday, November 21 trip to the Plains rolls around, both programs will have had a full season to figure out who they are under new leadership. For Auburn, it's a chance to close the home slate with momentum. For Samford, it's a measuring-stick trip into hostile SEC territory that tells Grass a lot about how far his rebuild still has to go.
