Two programs remaking themselves at the same time meet in Corvallis, with San Diego State bringing continuity and Oregon State betting everything on a fresh start.

San Diego State's case starts and ends with continuity: a healthy Denegal, a full receiving corps, and Sutton back in the backfield is simply more than Oregon State can match with a brand-new coordinator staff and a transfer quarterback who's never taken a snap in this building. Backing the Aztecs on the road is a bet that experience wins out over an offense still finding its rhythm in Year 1 under Shephard.

San Diego State
  • Denegal and Sutton both back healthy from 2025
  • Top four receivers all returning for Denegal
  • Picked as a Pac-12 contender, 6.5 win total
  • Defense replaces nearly every starter from 2025
  • New defensive coordinator in Demetrius Sumler
  • First season adjusting to new conference and travel
Oregon State
  • Maalik Murphy gives clarity at QB after 2025 mess
  • Experienced DC tandem, MacIntyre a past national COY
  • Fresh system under offensive-minded Shephard
  • Almost no roster continuity after realignment hit hardest
  • First-year head coach installing entirely new systems
  • Lost top two running backs, Hankerson and Allah

This one's a study in contrasts before it's a study in matchups. San Diego State enters its first Pac-12 season with the pieces that mattered most intact: Jayden Denegal back at quarterback and Lucky Sutton back in the backfield after the two combined for nearly 1,900 yards and 14 touchdowns last year. Oregon State, on the other hand, is starting almost from scratch under first-year head coach JaMarcus Shephard, who's leaning on Duke transfer Maalik Murphy to finally settle a quarterback spot that was a mess in 2025.

Denegal's health is the swing factor for San Diego State. He played through a shoulder injury essentially all of last season before having it surgically repaired in December, and by spring ball he was full-go and throwing without restriction. Getting a full, healthy offseason under him changes the ceiling for Sean Lewis' offense, which lagged behind the Aztecs' defense a year ago even with Denegal banged up. San Diego State is one of the more popular picks to contend early in the new-look conference, with oddsmakers setting the Aztecs' season win total at 6.5.

Oregon State's outlook is murkier by comparison, and that's before you even get to the roster attrition. Realignment hit the Beavers harder than almost anyone in the sport, and Shephard inherited a program with little returning continuity on either side of the ball. Murphy has reportedly won over teammates with his arm talent through fall camp, and the pairing of Cort Dennison and Mike MacIntyre — a national coordinator of the year in 2016 — gives the defense some pedigree, but this is still very much a program trying to find its footing in real time.

The backfield picture only sharpens the gap in stability. Sutton returns as the headliner for an Aztecs offense that also brings back its top four receivers, giving Denegal a full complement of weapons he barely had healthy last fall. Oregon State lost both of its top backs from a season ago in Anthony Hankerson and Salahadin Allah, handing the job to Vanderbilt transfer AJ Newberry, who arrives with zero prior snaps in this system.

San Diego State's defense is the one real question mark working against the continuity narrative — last year's group was the strength of the team, and it has to replace nearly every starter, with new coordinator Demetrius Sumler now running the show. That's the opening Oregon State needs if it's going to make this competitive: catch a retooling Aztecs defense on the road against a Beavers offense that, on paper, has more juice than what Corvallis trotted out a year ago. Whether that shows up on Saturday, October 10 is the whole ballgame.
