TLDR: Two Sun Belt teams that spent September and most of October losing both found a win last weekend. On Saturday, October 31, in Monroe, one of them gets to say it wasn't a fluke.

Southern Miss (2-5) visits UL Monroe (1-6) a week after each team got its first Sun Belt win. The Golden Eagles won with nearly 300 rushing yards and a backup quarterback. The Warhawks scored 18 points in the last 3 minutes to beat Troy. The game likely comes down to whether UL Monroe's run defense can slow Robinson and Wilder, and whether the Warhawks' offense can produce for a full game.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles
  • Robinson and Wilder combined for 299 rushing yards vs Louisiana
  • Wilder's late TD drive shows they can close a game
  • Starting QB Hampton out, Winfield completed 22 of 41
  • WRs Himes and Page both out long term
  • Defense allowed 31+ in 3 of last 5
UL Monroe Warhawks
  • Held Troy to 14 in the road win
  • Armenta's late game-winning drive at Troy
  • Scored 18 of their 21 at Troy in the final 3 minutes
  • Shut out 24-0 at home by Louisiana Tech
  • Allowed 38, 45 and 52 in 3 of the losses

The quarterback matchup sets this one up. Southern Miss has been without E. Hampton since a hand injury in September, with no timetable for his return, so Winfield runs the offense. Against Louisiana he went 22-of-41 for 299 yards. He wasn't sharp, but he gave the Golden Eagles enough. On the other side, Aidan Armenta threw 2 touchdowns at Troy, and the second one, a 16-yard throw to Darrion Gilliam with 15 seconds left, won it.

The real story of the Southern Miss win was the ground game. Steven Robinson ran 22 times for 145 yards and scored all 3 of his touchdowns in the first half. Jamarice Wilder added 154 yards on just 13 carries, including the 16-yard go-ahead run with 58 seconds left that finished a 75-yard drive. That's around 300 rushing yards from 2 backs, and they needed every one, because the receiver room is thin with J. Himes (foot) and G. Page (elbow) both out long term. The board hasn't posted yet, so no number to argue.

UL Monroe's win needs a closer look than the 21-14 final. The Warhawks scored 18 points inside the last 3 minutes, and Billy Pullen ended it by returning a forced fumble for a touchdown. For about 57 minutes that offense looked a lot like the one that got shut out 24-0 at home by Louisiana Tech. Credit the defense for holding Troy to 14, but the comeback is what made it a win.

There's a common opponent worth noting. Southern Miss went to Troy and lost 55-34. A few weeks later UL Monroe went there and won. That doesn't prove much about the Warhawks, but it does show how much the Southern Miss defense has given up: 48 to UConn, 55 to Troy and 31 to Louisiana, all inside the last 5. UL Monroe's defense hasn't been much better before last week, allowing 38, 45 and 52 in 3 of those losses.

Both teams sit at 1-2 in the Sun Belt, and this game decides which one gets out of the bottom of the standings for a week. Southern Miss is 2-5 and UL Monroe is 1-6. The forecast calls for 87 degrees and partly cloudy with 12 mph wind, which is a hot afternoon for late October. That tends to wear on a defense that's already been on the field a lot. If the Golden Eagles run the ball the way they did against Louisiana, the Warhawks will have to prove the Troy result is real for 4 quarters, not just the last 3 minutes.
