Duke won the ACC last season with Darian Mensah slinging it all over the field, then watched him bolt to Miami with his top two receivers, Cooper Barkate and Que'Sean Brown, right behind him. San Jose State transfer Walker Eget is locked in as QB1 now, inheriting a program with a championship pedigree but almost none of last year's actual weapons. Stanford's got its own quarterback change to sort out, handing the job to Michigan transfer Davis Warren under first-year head coach Tavita Pritchard, a former Cardinal QB himself who just came over from the Washington Commanders.
Pritchard's calling card is developing quarterbacks, and Warren gets a fresh shot to prove his rocky Michigan stint was more circumstance than ceiling. He'll also have a real target in Yale transfer WR Brown, who caught 71 passes for 1,085 yards and 11 touchdowns at the FCS level last fall. Duke's counter is running back Nate Sheppard, who broke out as a true freshman and enters 2026 with top-10-back buzz nationally — exactly the kind of player who can cover for a passing game still finding its footing.

Both staffs stayed mostly intact outside the quarterback room — Duke retained both coordinators from the title run, and Stanford gets defensive back Brandon Bryant back after a breakout 2025 that included two interceptions. That continuity matters given how much personnel turnover both sides are working through. Neither program is walking in with last year's identity fully in place, which makes this a messier projection than the usual reigning-champ-versus-rebuild script.
