Syracuse rolls into Alumni Stadium looking like a program back on track. Boston College is still trying to prove it isn't a program in freefall.

Syracuse is the far more stable program walking into this one — a returning, reportedly healthy starting quarterback in Angeli and a coaching staff that just landed its best recruiting class ever. Boston College is still sorting out its QB1 between two newcomers after a 2-10 season, which is a lot of moving parts for a program trying to win an ACC road-ish late-November game. Back Syracuse here; Boston College feels priced more on hope than on evidence right now.

Syracuse
  • Angeli reportedly fully healthy, ready for fall camp
  • 10-win season under Brown shows real ceiling
  • Highest-ranked recruiting class in program history
  • No live-game reps for Angeli since Achilles tear
  • Three portal QB additions signal lingering uncertainty
  • Offense stalled hard once Angeli went down in 2025
Boston College
  • Overhauled O-line via transfer portal additions
  • Administration retaining O'Brien, some continuity intact
  • Coming off 2-10, worst season since 2012
  • Head coach O'Brien firmly on the hot seat
  • QB1 still an open competition after Lonergan left for Rutgers

This one closes out the ACC slate for both teams on Friday, November 20, and the story is really about two different rebuild timelines. Fran Brown is entering year 3 in Syracuse and got a real glimpse of the ceiling in 2025 — a 10-win debut season the year before, then a 3-1 start last fall that included a win over Clemson before quarterback Steve Angeli went down with a torn Achilles and the offense lost its center of gravity. Angeli says he's fully healthy heading into 2026, and if that holds, Syracuse has its guy back.

Boston College is coming off the opposite kind of season. The Eagles finished 2-10 in 2025, their worst mark since 2012, and Bill O'Brien enters year 3 firmly on the hot seat even with the administration signaling patience for now. The offense is getting a full facelift up front — BC brought in guard Kristian Phillips from Michigan State and tackles Reggie Jackson and Trevon Humphrey through the portal — while last year's starting QB Dylan Lonergan left for Rutgers, leaving a competition between newcomers Grayson Wilson and Mason McKenzie to sort out over fall camp.

Neither program is walking into this stretch of the schedule with much margin for error. Syracuse is trying to show last year's Angeli injury was a blip and not a reset; Boston College is trying to show 2025 was the floor and not the new normal. That gap in trajectory is exactly why the market treats these two so differently right now.

The recruiting gap adds another layer here. Brown landed the highest-ranked class in Syracuse history this cycle, headlined by five-star receiver Calvin Russel III, on top of a QB room stocked via the portal with Malachi Nelson and Amari Odom as Angeli insurance. Boston College's portal work has been almost entirely defensive against the losses up front and at quarterback — necessary rebuilding, but rebuilding all the same.

By late November, both rosters should look very different from whatever camp battles are still playing out in August, so plenty can shift. But as a season-long proposition, Syracuse enters this window with a healthier quarterback answer and a program trending up, while Boston College is still searching for its identity under center and along the line.
