Syracuse heads to Raleigh trying to prove last year's collapse was a blip, while NC State's got a quarterback who's actually stuck around long enough to matter.

NC State's got the far steadier hand under center with Bailey back for year 3, and that continuity matters against a Syracuse team still figuring out its post-injury identity at quarterback. The Wolfpack should be favored here and deservedly so. Syracuse's ceiling depends entirely on Angeli looking like the guy from his 4 healthy games in 2025, which is a lot to bank on for road value.
Syracuse
+Angeli flashed 10 TDs, 2 INTs in 4 games before injury
+Fran Brown's portal class ranked 9th nationally
+Back-to-back program-best recruiting classes under Brown
−Coming off a 3-9 collapse in 2025
−Angeli still working back from torn Achilles
−Program has just 3 winning seasons in last 12 years
NC State
+CJ Bailey returns for rare 3rd year as starter
+Bailey threw for 3,105 yards, 25 TDs last season
+Schedule avoids Miami, SMU, Clemson and Pitt
−Preseason projections have Wolfpack mid-pack in ACC
−New receiving corps still needs time with Bailey
−History of underachieving despite talent
This one's a study in contrasts. NC State brings back CJ Bailey for his junior season, a rare feat in a sport where quarterbacks bolt for the portal the moment they show flashes. Syracuse, meanwhile, is banking on Steve Angeli coming back healthy from a torn Achilles that wiped out the back half of his 2025 season just as he was heating up.
Bailey completed 68.8% of his throws for 3,105 yards with 25 touchdown passes last season, and added 6 more scores on the ground. Offensive coordinator Kurt Roper has had a full offseason to build around him and a fresh crop of pass catchers, and the expectation in Raleigh is that the Wolfpack offense gets even more explosive, not less. Syracuse's counter is Angeli's small sample from 2025: 1,317 yards, 10 touchdowns, just 2 interceptions in only 4 games before the injury ended his year.

Fran Brown hasn't been shy about attacking the roster problem head-on. Syracuse's 2024 and 2025 recruiting classes were the two highest-ranked in program history, and Brown's first transfer portal haul ranked ninth nationally. He also brought in extra arms at quarterback — Malachi Nelson and Amari Odom among them — as insurance in case Angeli's recovery hits a snag. NC State doesn't need that kind of QB depth chart chess; that's the whole selling point of having Bailey in the building for a third straight year.

NC State's schedule spot helps its case too. The Wolfpack avoid conference heavyweights Miami, SMU, Clemson and Pitt this year, leaving them with one of the more manageable slates in the ACC. That's the kind of thing that turns a middling roster into a program that finally breaks through — or at least it's the argument NC State fans have been making for a while now, given how often "this is finally the Wolfpack's turn" talk hasn't panned out. Syracuse doesn't get that same schedule cushion; after a 3-9 collapse, the Orange need immediate results, not a gradual climb.

Angeli's health status is the swing variable for this whole Syracuse season, let alone this specific game. If he's fully built back up by mid-November, Syracuse's offense has real shots to make this competitive given the flashes he showed before going down. If he's limited or the staff leans on a committee approach, Bailey and NC State's offense should be able to out-execute whatever Syracuse throws at them defensively.
