The whole story here starts under center. Steve Angeli was in the middle of one of the best stretches by any quarterback in the country before a torn Achilles at Clemson ended his 2025 season just 4 games in — he'd thrown for 1,316 yards, second-most in the FBS at the time, with 10 touchdowns. He says he's fully healed and ready to go without restrictions. Across the field, Virginia enters with a new starter of its own: Missouri transfer Beau Pribula, whom Tony Elliott tabbed as QB1 back in May after a spring battle with Pitt transfer Eli Holstein.
Elliott's decision came with real buy-in. Pribula completed 67.4% of his passes for Missouri last year with 11 touchdowns to 9 picks, and he ran for 297 yards and 6 more scores, giving Virginia the dual-threat dimension that fits Elliott's offense. Syracuse, meanwhile, is banking on more than Angeli's health — Fran Brown brought in the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history, headlined by 5-star receiver Calvin Russell III, plus a defensive line overhaul built around transfers Dillan Fontus and Tunmise Adeleye.

That's not to say Syracuse is hopeless. The Orange started 3-1 last year before the injury hit, which is enough to suggest Brown's program has a real ceiling when it's healthy. The concern is what happens if Angeli takes a hit and Brown has to turn back to the kind of shaky quarterback play that sank the second half of 2025. Virginia doesn't carry that same variance — Elliott's program has been building steadily for 4 years, and this is the most talent he's had at his disposal.
