TLDR: Syracuse just won a game it nearly gave away, and Virginia just lost one it never had a chance in. On Saturday, October 10 at Scott Stadium, one of these ACC teams gets back to respectable and the other slides further down the league.

Syracuse heads to Charlottesville with Amari Odom coming off a strong first start, a 42-41 overtime win at UConn where the defense also gave up 27 straight points. Virginia's offense had averaged over 40 points before Florida State sacked Beau Pribula 10 times in a 38-7 blowout. The game likely turns on whether the Cavaliers' highly rated offensive line bounces back and whether Syracuse's defense can hold a lead. No betting line has been posted yet.

Syracuse Orange
  • Odom threw for 335 yards in his first start
  • Hatcher: 12 catches, 152 yards, 3 TDs at UConn
  • Virginia's defense missed tackles all night against FSU
  • Blew a 20-point lead, allowed 27 straight to UConn
  • 0-2 in ACC play, lost to Cal and Pitt
  • Odom has only one start of tape
Virginia Cavaliers
  • All 5 OL starters entered as top-100 linemen
  • Averaged 40.5 points before the FSU game
  • Every win this season came at Scott Stadium
  • Allowed 10 sacks, under 2 yards a carry at FSU
  • WR Ward out, Newton-Short hamstring questionable
  • DL Hammond out for an extended stretch

The football story starts at quarterback. Amari Odom made his first Syracuse start at UConn and put up 335 passing yards. Most of it went to Umari Hatcher, who caught 12 balls for 152 yards and 3 touchdowns, including the overtime score before the Orange went for 2 and won 42-41. On the other side, Beau Pribula spent Saturday in Tallahassee running for his life. Florida State sacked him 10 times, and the Seminoles had only 7 sacks in their first 4 games combined.

That sack total is the number Virginia has to explain this week. All 5 starters on the Cavaliers' offensive line came into the season graded as top-100 linemen, and they had been the engine of an offense averaging 40.5 points and 447.3 yards a game. Against Florida State they allowed 8 tackles for loss besides the sacks, ran for under 2 yards a carry and didn't score until midway through the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers are also thin at receiver. T. Ward is out and D. Newton-Short is fighting a hamstring problem, so Pribula has fewer places to throw even when he does get time.

No line has been posted yet, which makes sense for a game that reads differently depending on which week you believe. Syracuse's last game was two games in one. The Orange led by 20 more than once, then gave up 27 unanswered points to UConn before saving it in overtime. Virginia was dominant at home against NC State, Norfolk State and Delaware, then was handled by West Virginia at home and blown out on the road.

Matchups decide this one. Syracuse's defense just let a UConn offense run off 27 straight points, and now it gets a Virginia line that has 7 days to prove the Florida State game was a one-off. The Cavaliers' defense has its own problem after missing tackles all night in Tallahassee, and it will see an Odom-to-Hatcher connection that just made a full game's worth of plays. Virginia will also be without J. Hammond on the defensive line for an extended stretch.

The ACC stakes are clear. Syracuse is 0-2 in the conference with losses to Cal and Pitt, so a road win is how it climbs out. Virginia is 1-1 in league play, with SMU, Wake Forest, Duke and Virginia Tech still ahead. Losing at home to an Orange team on its second-ever Odom start would take the air out of the season. Expect plenty of points and a Virginia line with something to prove.
