Sonny Dykes has TCU positioned as one of the Big 12's contenders again heading into Friday, September 25, and the plan hinges on Harvard transfer Jaden Craig replacing record-setter Josh Hoover, who left for Indiana. Craig put up huge numbers in the Ivy League — 25 touchdown passes and 2,869 yards last season — and Dykes has raved about his maturity and dual-threat ability, but this is still a first look at a new starter running a retooled offense under first-year play-caller Gordon Sammis.
UCF, meanwhile, is trying to dig out of a rough Big 12 debut under Scott Frost. The Knights went 5-7 overall and 2-7 in conference play in 2025, a modest step up from 4-8 the year before but nowhere close to competitive with the league's upper half. Frost blew up the quarterback room this offseason, and the fix is James Madison transfer Alonza Barnett III, last year's Sun Belt Player of the Year, who's expected to walk in as the unquestioned starter — assuming he's fully cleared from a spring injury that limited his reps.

Both programs are leaning on a new quarterback to carry a transition year, but they're starting from very different baselines. TCU is defending a 9-4 season and a No. 25 final ranking; UCF is trying to prove last season's 2-7 conference mark was a floor, not a preview.
TCU's defense held up well enough last year to close the season with a bowl win over USC, and Dykes has talked openly about wanting fewer self-inflicted mistakes on offense now that Craig is running the show. If that defense travels the way it played down the stretch in 2025, it gives the Horned Frogs a foundation UCF simply doesn't have yet — the Knights' issues last season went beyond quarterback play.

Barnett's health is the swing factor for UCF. Frost has said his quarterback should be full-go by fall camp, but a guy who couldn't take live reps all spring walking into a Power Conference road atmosphere is exactly the kind of variable that can turn a competitive script into a blowout in a hurry.
