Temple's turnaround project runs into one of the American Conference's better recent stories when the Owls make the trip to Greenville for a Halloween-eve visit with East Carolina.

East Carolina enters this one off a 9-4 season and returns far more proven production than Temple's rebuild currently offers. Even while breaking in a new starting quarterback, a Pirates team with 11 preseason All-Conference honorees and a home crowd in Greenville is the safer outright pick. Temple's improvement under Keeler is real, but betting the Owls to win outright means betting on an unproven starter before he's had a chance to prove himself.

Both programs are staring down quarterback uncertainty as the 2026 season kicks off, which is what makes this one worth circling early. Temple has to replace its starter entirely after K.C. Keeler's first season pulled the Owls from 3-9 to 5-7 — real progress, but progress built on 9 returning starters everywhere except behind center. East Carolina's version of the same problem carries higher stakes: Katin Houser is gone to Illinois, Military Bowl standout Chaston Ditta bolted for North Texas, and new offensive coordinator Jordan Davis has spent the offseason auditioning transfers Emory Williams and Mitch Griffis with no winner named as of midsummer.

Whoever wins each job inherits real weapons. Temple's receiving room, headlined by JoJo Bermudez, Colin Chase and All-Conference tight end Peter Clarke, is one of the American's better positional groups and gives a first-year starter an easy outlet. East Carolina counters with senior receiver Brock Spalding and defensive lineman Jasiyah Robinson, both preseason first-team All-American Conference picks, plus a defense that new coordinator Jordon Hankins inherits after building a top-50 unit at Memphis last season. Neither side has a betting number attached to this one yet, but a home Pirates team replacing a Group of 5-caliber quarterback still walks in with a deeper two-deep than a Temple roster in year 2 of a rebuild.

That gap in continuity is really the whole story here. East Carolina went 9-4 and finished tied for 4th in the AAC in 2025, a season that ended with a bowl trip and All-Conference recognition scattered across both sides of the ball. Temple, by contrast, is still chasing its first bowl bid of the Keeler era after cracking .500 for the first time in 5 years. Both teams have plenty to prove this fall, but only one of them is coming off a winning season.
