Josh Heupel is entering year 6 in Knoxville and he still doesn't know who his quarterback is. Redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and five-star true freshman Faizon Brandon have been dueling for the job all offseason, and Heupel isn't in a hurry to end it — he didn't name a starter last year until after the second fall scrimmage, and there's no reason to think this year is different. Whoever wins the gig gets thrown into SEC road games fast.
Arkansas is a completely different animal. Ryan Silverfield left a 50-24 run at Memphis to take over a program that lost 7 straight to close out a 2-10 disaster under interim coach Bobby Petrino. He's already rebuilt more than 40 spots on the roster, and the quarterback race is between returner KJ Jackson and Memphis transfer AJ Hill. That's a lot of new faces trying to gel in a hurry.

None of this is close to a finished product on either sideline, which is exactly why an early-October trip to Fayetteville is worth circling. Tennessee wants to prove the bowl-game collapse against Illinois was a blip. Arkansas just wants to look like a team that isn't still the same one that got run off the field a season ago.

The schedule isn't doing Arkansas any favors, either — ESPN's Football Power Index tagged the Razorbacks with the toughest slate in college football this season, which means Silverfield doesn't get a soft runway to figure things out. Tennessee, by contrast, gets to lean on stability: same coach, same system, a defense that's been in it long enough to not need a total teardown, even with the QB spot unsettled.
This is a program-trajectory game as much as anything. Tennessee is trying to build off a season that ended one bad final five minutes short of a better bowl outcome. Arkansas is just trying to find out who it is under a new staff before conference play chews it up. That gap should show up on the field by the time Friday night in October rolls around.
