Mike Elko's crew went 11-1 in the regular season, cracked the AP top 3 for the first time in 30 years, and made the program's first-ever College Football Playoff appearance. Marcel Reed is back under center after that run, and Elko himself is already on the Dodd Trophy preseason watch list. Tennessee is coming off the opposite kind of offseason -- an 8-5 letdown that ended with Josh Heupel firing his defensive coordinator and bringing in Jim Knowles to fix things, all while the Vols' quarterback room got thrown into chaos after Joey Aguilar was denied eligibility to return.
That QB uncertainty is the whole storyline in Knoxville right now. Five-star freshman Faizon Brandon, the No. 3 quarterback in the 2026 class, is the presumptive favorite to open the season, with George MacIntyre -- who threw all of 9 passes as a freshman last year -- pushing him. Heupel is 45-20 at Tennessee and has never been shy about pushing tempo, so even a shaky QB situation won't stop the Vols from trying to score in bunches. The Aggies, for their part, have the higher ceiling and the more proven quarterback -- the question is whether a patchwork offensive line can hold up long enough for Reed and a deep group of skill players to make it count.
