On August 24, Josh Heupel told his team that true freshman Faizon Brandon would start at quarterback, capping a battle that ran from spring ball through the second fall scrimmage and beat out sophomore George MacIntyre, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported. Brandon is the first true freshman to start a season opener at Tennessee since 2004.

Heupel said afterward there wasn't just one thing that separated Brandon from the field — it was command of the offense, fundamentals, pocket awareness and a habit of protecting the football while getting it to his playmakers, according to On3. The five-star was a top-10 overall recruit who went 35-1 as a high school starter with 8,984 total yards and 114 touchdowns, and he never wavered off his commitment to Knoxville even as other blue-bloods came calling late.
The buzz has followed him off the practice field, too — Brandon just landed on the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year watch list. He debuts against Furman on September 5, then gets thrown straight into a road trip to Georgia Tech the following week.

Last season ended on a two-point gut punch in Illinois
There's no 2026 form to lean on yet — the record sits at 0-0 — but last season's finish still frames the opener. Tennessee finished last season with a 28-30 loss to Illinois on December 30, closing out its final five games at 3-2 after wins over New Mexico State (42-9) and at Florida (31-11) were sandwiched around losses to Oklahoma (27-33) and Vanderbilt (24-45).
That stretch showed a team capable of blowing teams out and just as capable of letting one slip away — the Illinois finale went final on December 30 with the game there for the taking and Tennessee two points short. Arion Carter's suspension just got cut in half
Buried under the QB news was a legal win of its own. Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter is now set to be eligible for the September 12 trip to Georgia Tech, Pete Thamel reported — a two-game NCAA suspension for accepting a $427 flight tied to an agent before the 2026 draft was reduced to one game on appeal, after Carter had already repaid the money.
The NCAA's own statement on the case landed August 26. Practically, it means Carter sits only for the Furman opener before he's back in the lineup for Atlanta — and for a defense about to face a Georgia Tech offense that hasn't taken a snap yet in 2026, getting him back after one week instead of two is the kind of break that can decide a September road game.
Furman is next, and the number says this is a debut, not a measuring stick
The opener is set for September 5 vs. Furman at Neyland Stadium. Furman already has a game under its belt this season, taking care of Anderson (SC) 20-3 behind Michigan transfer Jake Garcia, who went 15-of-28 for 183 yards with an interception, and leans on defensive end Joshua Stoneking, a consensus All-American who led the nation in sacks a season ago — one matchup problem for Brandon to solve early. The line opened at Tennessee -46.5, with the total set at 66.5, both numbers that mark this as a freshman's coming-out party more than a real test.
Wide receiver R. Jackson is dealing with a leg injury and is questionable for the opener, per Covers' injury table, reported earlier this month — nothing hardened enough to rule him out, but a game-time call worth watching in Brandon's first start. Whatever happens against Furman, the real measuring stick is a week later, on the road at Georgia Tech.
