TLDR: Missouri just ran Florida out of its own homecoming. Texas A&M just pulled out of a 2-game SEC dive. Saturday in Columbia shows which of those results was real.

No. 25 Missouri (4-1) hosts Texas A&M (3-2) the week after beating Florida 45-17 behind 560 yards of offense, while the Aggies bounced back from 2 straight SEC losses by running through Arkansas 34-7. The game comes down to A&M's injury-thinned, run-first offense and Marcel Reed's passing against a Missouri defense that just shut down Jadan Baugh. The Aggies also have to show they can score on the road after managing 6 points in their only trip so far, to LSU.

Texas A&M Aggies
  • Run game topped 230 yards against Arkansas
  • Defense shut out Arkansas over final 3 quarters
  • Reed used his legs more effectively last time out
  • 2 receivers lost for season, thin passing game
  • Scored 6 points in only road game, at LSU
  • Pass rush still a concern against a hot QB
Missouri Tigers
  • Simmons 340 yards, Roberts 211 against Florida
  • Held Heisman candidate Baugh to 13 yards on 12 carries
  • Home crowd, offense coming off its best game
  • TE Hoffman, WR Brady, OG Green all out
  • DL Kitchen and Smith both missed the Florida game
  • Lost at Mississippi State in only other SEC test

Start with the Missouri offense, because it's the best unit on the field right now. Against Florida, Austin Simmons threw for 340 yards and 2 touchdowns, Jamal Roberts ran for 211 yards and 3 more, and Mizzou piled up 560 yards. That was the 45-17 win that snapped a 9-game losing streak against ranked opponents and gave Eli Drinkwitz his first regular-season win over a top-10 team in 11 tries. Texas A&M has to answer that with Marcel Reed, who looked better against Arkansas but is still more of a runner than a passer.

Reed's limits as a passer matter more because of who's missing around him. The Aggies have lost 2 receivers, T. Bussey and M. Williams, for the season, and running back T. Riden Jr. has been out since August. That explains why the Arkansas game plan went through the run game, which put up more than 230 yards, and why the longest offensive play of A&M's season so far was a 55-yard catch by tight end Kiotti Armstrong, not a wideout. Missouri's own injury list runs 6 deep, including tight end G. Hoffman, receiver J. Brady and guard C. Green.

The defenses tell a story too. Missouri took Jadan Baugh, a Heisman candidate with 11 rushing touchdowns through 4 games, and held him to 13 yards on 12 carries. Against an A&M offense that wants to run first, that's the matchup to watch. The Aggies' defense bent without breaking against Arkansas and shut the Razorbacks out over the final 3 quarters, but their own beat writers are still worried about the pass rush, and Simmons is coming off a 340-yard day.

The form card shows A&M's season split in 2. It opened with 50-0 and 48-20 home wins, then lost 31-21 at home to Kentucky and 35-6 at LSU. The LSU game is the only time the Aggies have left Kyle Field this year, and they managed 6 points. Columbia is their second road game. Missouri's only loss is 31-24 at Mississippi State, which makes these 2 SEC defeats hard to compare.

The open question on the Missouri side is the defensive front. DL L. Kitchen and D. Smith were both listed out before the Florida game, and Missouri still stuffed Baugh without them. Nobody has said whether either one is back for A&M. If they return, Missouri's run defense gets 2 bodies deeper against an offense that has to run to function.

The forecast reads about 80 degrees, cloudy, 10 mph wind and almost no rain, so weather shouldn't decide it. What should is A&M's ground game against a Missouri front that just shut down one of the best backs in the country, and whether Reed can make the Tigers pay if they crowd the line. If he can't, the Aggies are relying on Missouri's offense to have an off day at home after its best game of the year.
