Texas Tech's roster still has the deeper, more proven pieces even with the rebuild up front, and a Big 12 champion doesn't fall to underdog status against a team picked 14th in the conference. The wrinkle is that Tech's own quarterback situation is genuinely unsettled between a suspension-shadowed Sorsby and an ACL-recovering Hammond, which is the one thing keeping this from being a lock. Lean Red Raiders to win, but don't expect it to be as clean as the name-brand gap suggests.

Texas Tech
  • Big 12 champs, first CFP appearance last year
  • Dickey-Joyner duo returns after 1,000-yard, 14-TD year
  • Preseason No. 9 nationally, Big 12 favorites
  • Four of five O-line starters gone
  • Defense gutted after historic 2025 season
  • QB Sorsby's status clouded by gambling probe
Cincinnati
  • Re-signed key O-line starters for rebuild
  • Transfer QB French threw for 2,800-plus yards twice
  • Started 7-1 last year, proved competitive
  • Picked 14th of 16 in Big 12 preseason poll
  • Lost last 5 games in each of past 2 seasons
  • New DC and co-OCs still installing systems

Friday, October 23 marks Brendan Sorsby's first trip back to Cincinnati since he left for Lubbock, and the circumstances around him are messier than anyone expected when the transfer happened. The Indiana and Ohio gaming commissions have been probing bets Sorsby placed dating back to his freshman year at Indiana, and while a Lubbock judge granted him a temporary injunction to keep him on the field in 2026, that ruling came attached to a proposed 2-game suspension. Backup Will Hammond is the other option under center for Texas Tech, but he's still working back from a torn ACL, so it's not settled who's actually taking snaps by the time this one rolls around.

Cincinnati isn't losing sleep over Tech's drama, mostly because the Bearcats have their own quarterback overhaul to manage. JC French IV arrived from Georgia Southern with back-to-back 2,800-yard passing seasons and immediately became the answer at a position Sorsby's exit left empty. Scott Satterfield also swapped out his defensive coordinator for veteran Nate Woody and split offensive coordinator duties between two position coaches, so there's a lot of new voices in that building — the kind of turnover that tends to show up on tape before it shows up anywhere else.

Strip away the subplots and this looks like a talent mismatch on paper. Texas Tech reached the College Football Playoff last season and opens 2026 ranked No. 9 nationally, while Cincinnati was tabbed 14th out of 16 teams in the preseason Big 12 poll. But rankings from July don't play the games, and Cincinnati has made a habit of humbling favorites early before fading late — which is exactly why this one is worth circling months in advance.

The Bearcats opened 2025 at 7-1 and were squarely in the Big 12 title race in November before dropping their final 5 games — the second straight year that exact collapse happened under Satterfield. If the pattern repeats, a late-October date lands right in the danger zone. Texas Tech, meanwhile, is banking on Cameron Dickey and Quinten Joyner to keep carrying the offense the way Dickey did during his 1,000-plus-yard, 14-touchdown 2025 season, because the passing game and the line in front of it look nothing like the group that got Tech to the playoff.

Texas Tech's defense also lost most of the pieces that made last year's group historic, which tempers just how dominant the Red Raiders should be even against a team picked to finish near the Big 12 basement. Add a possible suspension hanging over the quarterback room, and this shapes up as a game where Cincinnati's disruption potential is more real than the preseason odds boards suggest.
