Texas Tech's 2025 run — Big 12 title, first CFP berth in program history — bought serious offseason capital, but the quarterback room has turned into the story nobody wanted. Brendan Sorsby, the Cincinnati transfer who was supposed to lock the job down, has his 2026 availability clouded by an off-field betting investigation. Will Hammond, who sparked a second-half comeback against Utah last year, is still working back from a torn ACL with his Week 1 status unresolved. Oregon State's answer under center comes from a completely different offseason: new head coach JaMarcus Shephard brought in transfer Maalik Murphy to steady a room that's otherwise been gutted and rebuilt.
Shephard, hired in late November, didn't just change quarterbacks — he changed everything. Ryan Wallace and Mitch Dahlen run the offense now, with Dahlen doubling as Murphy's QB coach after time on staff at Alabama and Washington. On defense, Cort Dennison and Mike MacIntyre share coordinator duties, and MacIntyre's got a national coach of the year trophy from his 2016 stint at Colorado. Cameron Dickey and J'Koby Williams are both back in the backfield, giving whoever ends up at quarterback a two-headed run game to lean on while things sort themselves out. The Red Raiders also landed a haul of blue-chip signees, including five-star tackle Felix Ojo and edge rusher LaDamion Guyton — but with four of five starting offensive linemen gone from last year's group, that talent may need time to gel behind an inexperienced front.
Reser Stadium will be rocking for the Beavers' Pac-12 return, and this is their first true measuring-stick opponent after tune-ups against Houston. Oregon State isn't going to out-talent Texas Tech across the board, but a home crowd against a visiting team that may be starting a true freshman or a mid-tier portal arm at quarterback is exactly the kind of spot lower-level programs circle on the schedule.
