The game was delayed roughly an hour and 15 minutes for severe weather, which only added to the chaos once it resumed. Both offenses kept finding the end zone in extra frames, with each side scoring a touchdown in the first two overtimes before Nick Billoups' 2-yard run in the second OT tied it at 41 and set up the finish.
The story of the day was Gavin Garcia. The Citadel running back piled up 137 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a 25-yard scoring run on the Bulldogs' first overtime possession that flipped the game's momentum for good. Nick Billoups added 38 yards and 2 scores, and Sebastien Boyle chipped in 70 yards and a touchdown as The Citadel ran for 268 yards and 6 touchdowns as a team.
Charlotte came in leaning heavily on a rebuild. The 49ers went 1-11 last season and brought in 21 transfers over the offseason to try to change that, with Pitt transfer Cole Gonzales winning the starting quarterback job over the incumbents. Gonzales had thrown only 11 passes of real consequence in his college career before Saturday, and against a Southern Conference defense he still found a way to force overtime, which says something about the arm talent even if the whole picture is still unfinished.

For The Citadel, this was actually its second road trip to open the year, having already played a Southern Conference opener at Wofford. That kind of live-game rep matters in September, when an FBS team playing its first real snap of the season is still figuring out live speed. Head coach's program has built its identity around a physical run game and discipline up front, and Saturday's total on the ground backed that up against a Group of 5 defense.
The line before kickoff had Charlotte as a heavy favorite, and money kept coming in on the 49ers as the spread widened and the price shortened. None of that mattered once the Bulldogs' backfield got rolling and Charlotte's defense couldn't get a stop when it needed one most. The schools had met only once before, a 63-56 double-overtime shootout back in 2014, so if nothing else, this rivalry now has two data points and zero boring finishes.
This one will be remembered less for the final score than for how it got there — a rebuild trying to find its footing, an FCS program flexing a physical run game, and neither side blinking through three extra periods before someone finally did.
