This one kicks off as a Week 1 curtain-raiser under new management on both sidelines. Michigan State handed the keys to Pat Fitzgerald in December after moving on from Jonathan Smith just 2 seasons into his rebuild, while Toledo brought in Mike Jacobs, who arrives with a 94-23 career record and back-to-back SoCon titles at Mercer. Both programs are starting fresh, but only one of them did it without blowing up the roster.
Toledo's answer at quarterback is junior John Alan Richter, who spent 3-plus years mostly in mop-up duty before Jacobs made it clear this offseason he wanted Richter, not a portal replacement, running his offense. Michigan State's picture is murkier. Alessio Milivojevic took over the final 4 games of last season and threw for 1,267 yards and 10 touchdowns, but he's fending off Florida Atlantic transfer Cam Fancher in fall camp, and Fitzgerald has said the depth chart won't truly be set until game week.

The roster math tells its own story. Michigan State lost 45 players off last year's team and brought in 32 through the portal, a near-total transfer purge for a program that just fired its coach. Toledo, by contrast, kept its offensive line mostly intact and layered in one of the better transfer classes in the MAC, headlined by Andrew Zock, last year's FCS Defensive Player of the Year. That continuity gap is a big part of why the early number sits where it does.

None of that guarantees Toledo waltzes into East Lansing and wins comfortably. Richter's college resume is still thin, first career road start included, and whatever chemistry Jacobs has built in a few months of camp hasn't been tested against a Power 4 roster yet. Michigan State also isn't devoid of talent, it's just unproven talent, and the Spartans do carry the oldest roster in the Big Ten, so there's experience buried in that turnover even if the pieces haven't played together.

Whichever way the opener breaks, it's a proving ground for both staffs. Fitzgerald wants to show a chaotic offseason didn't wreck the program's identity, and Jacobs wants to show Toledo can win big games from day one instead of needing a year to install his system.
