Troy and South Alabama run it back for the Battle for the Belt, and both sides are showing up with rosters that look nothing like the ones that played an overtime classic a year ago.

Troy brings back the more experienced defensive staff and a quarterback who's already delivered in this rivalry, which is enough to lean their way on the moneyline over a South Alabama team replacing its defensive coordinator and nursing backfield injuries. The Jaguars have a fresh face-lift on offense with a transfer receiver in the mix, but that's unproven against a Troy front that returns most of its key pieces. Troy also won the last two meetings, and rivalry games tend to favor the team that's been here and done it.

Troy
  • Defensive staff returns intact for third season
  • Won last two meetings, leads series 10-4
  • Lost leading rusher, receiver, and a starting guard
  • Was dead last in Sun Belt yards per game in 2025
South Alabama
  • New DC Todd Orlando brings a fresh scheme
  • Added transfer WR Everett Hunter for the passing game
  • Top two running backs still working back from injury
  • Troy has beaten them in each of the last two meetings

Troy's calling card heading into this one is continuity on defense. Coordinator Dontae Wright and co-coordinator Nathan Burton are both back for a third season running that side of the ball, and senior defensive end Donnie Smith anchors a front that should still be disruptive. The question is what happens when Troy actually has the ball, because the skill-position group that got them through 2025 is largely gone.

That offensive rebuild is the real story in Troy. Leading rusher Tae Meadows left for Auburn, leading receiver DJ Epps is off to West Virginia, do-it-all threat Roman Mothershed transferred to LSU, and starting guard Paul Bowling is now at Florida State. Troy was already dead last in the Sun Belt in yards per game a season ago, and coach Gerad Parker is replacing four core pieces from a unit that couldn't move the ball consistently even with them on the field.

South Alabama enters year three under Major Applewhite with a defensive shake-up of its own, bringing in Todd Orlando as defensive coordinator alongside holdover co-coordinator Jason Washington. The Jaguars also added transfer receiver Everett Hunter, who caught 24 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns at FCS Nicholls State last season, giving their passing game a piece it didn't have in 2025.

Where South Alabama has real uncertainty is in the backfield. PJ Martin ran for 326 yards on 60 carries before missing the final four games of 2025 with an injury, and he's still working his way back toward full health. A promising redshirt sophomore behind him is dealing with a similar situation and wasn't a full go in spring ball. Both are expected to be ready by fall camp, but neither has proven durability yet, and that's a problem against a Troy defense that should still be sound up front.

The history favors Troy in a way that's hard to ignore. The Trojans have won the last two meetings in this series, including a 31-24 overtime win last October in Troy behind quarterback Tucker Kilcrease, who threw for more than 200 yards and ran for over 100. Troy now leads the all-time series 10-4. South Alabama gets this one at Hancock Whitney Stadium, which flips the site advantage, but a rivalry game with a trophy on the line rarely comes down to who's playing better on paper in July.

This is still months out, and fall camp will sort out plenty on both sides — particularly whether Troy's retooled skill groups can find any rhythm and whether South Alabama's backfield is actually ready to carry a real workload. For now, this shapes up as a defense-forward rivalry game between two Sun Belt programs that both know exactly how much this trophy means.
