This one's a study in contrasts before it's even a study in schemes. Houston went 10-3 in 2025, closed the year with a wild 38-35 Texas Bowl win over LSU, and brings back roughly a dozen starters off that team. UCF went 5-7, turned over close to three dozen roster spots in the portal, and is starting over at quarterback with a transfer who spent the spring banged up. The Big 12 doesn't run a preseason media poll anymore, but every outlet that's ranked the league has Houston in the top half and UCF closer to the bottom.
Conner Weigman is the reason Houston's ceiling talk is real. He threw for over 3,400 total yards in 2025 and capped it with a four-touchdown Texas Bowl performance, and Willie Fritz has already named him QB1 again for Year 3. UCF's answer is Alonza Barnett III, the Sun Belt Player of the Year import from James Madison, but he dealt with an undisclosed injury that limited him in spring ball. Scott Frost says Barnett's trending toward full health for camp, which is the kind of update you want to see attached to a hedge, not a guarantee, this many weeks out.
