Both teams are betting their season on a quarterback who barely has a track record in this uniform. UCF handed the keys to Alonza Barnett III, who transferred in from James Madison after throwing for 2,806 yards and 23 touchdowns while adding 589 rushing yards and 15 more scores on the ground last year. Pittsburgh counters with Mason Heintschel, who seized the job midway through his true freshman season and finished with 2,354 yards and 16 touchdowns. Neither guy has taken a snap for his current team in a game that counts.
The rosters around them look almost nothing like they did a year ago. UCF lost 34 players to the transfer portal after a 5-7 finish and had to rebuild nearly its entire two-deep — 247Sports rated the Knights' incoming class last in the Big 12. Pitt went the other direction, bringing in 16 transfers to patch holes after losing most of its starting defense and its top two receivers, while head coach Pat Narduzzi has said flatly he thinks this roster is better than last year's 8-5, bowl-bound group.

That gap in continuity is the whole story here. Pitt returns a QB-RB combo in Heintschel and Ja'Kyrian "Boosie" Turner that already produced together as freshmen, while UCF is stitching together new pieces on both sides of the ball under Scott Frost, who's openly called roster reconstruction an annual chore in Orlando.

Frost isn't hiding from the rebuild — he's leaned into it, going out and getting proven producers like Barnett and running backs Landen Chambers and Duke Watson to fill the two biggest holes on offense immediately. It's a sensible plan for a program that's missed a bowl two years running, but plugging in that many new starters at once usually means uneven weeks before it means wins.

Pitt has its own thin spots — the receiving room lost its top two options — but Bill Connelly's SP+ still has the Panthers ahead of where UCF projects, with more returning structure on both lines. For a program that's made a bowl in eight of Narduzzi's 11 seasons, banking on continuity over an unproven newcomer class is the safer bet on paper.
None of that guarantees style points. Barnett is a legitimate dual-threat who can keep UCF in games by himself, and Heintschel is still just a sophomore breaking in a retooled group of targets. This has the look of a game that could get sloppy before it gets fun — which, for a Saturday, September 12 matchup between two teams still figuring out who they are, tracks.
