Barnett delivers clean debut as UCF ties scoring record with 73-6 win
Alonza Barnett needed one series to look like the answer at quarterback, Duke Watson needed one carry to look like a steal, and the Knights matched their own scoring record in a 73-6 opener over Bethune-Cookman.
Frost calls Barnett 'A-plus' after a clean, fast debut
Alonza Barnett III went 11 of 18 for 158 yards and a touchdown through the air on September 3, then punched in a 5-yard scoring run in the first quarter that helped UCF open a 21-0 lead. The James Madison transfer threw one interception on a night Bethune-Cookman blitzed more than Scott Frost expected, but the head coach came away sounding like a man who found his guy — and afterward, the praise got even more specific.
"Alonza is A-plus, just intellectually and understanding the game," Frost said, crediting Barnett's grasp of the offense for the flexibility it gave him to adjust protections and play calls on the fly, per On3. Frost was careful not to get carried away by the scoreboard, though, saying "we did what we were supposed to do tonight, and not a lot more than that" — a line already pointed at next week's tougher test. He also singled out Duke Watson and Taevion Swint as backs who "both have big-play potential" once they find space, which is exactly what Watson did on UCF's second offensive snap of the season.
73-6 ties the school record and keeps the opener streak alive
The final did more than validate camp talk — it ties the largest margin and the most points UCF has ever scored, matching the 73 the Knights put up on Austin Peay on October 28, 2017. UCF outgained Bethune-Cookman 560-181, with Watson turning his first carry as a Knight into a 64-yard touchdown on the second play of the game, and defensive back Jayden Williams turning a Tyler Jefferson interception into a 47-yard pick-six with 10:42 left in the first quarter. It is about as complete a reset as a program could ask for after last season closed with losses in 4 of its final 5 games, including a 21-41 defeat at BYU on November 29.

And for one week at least, the Knights are in good company in a crowded Big 12 — UCF sits 1-0 alongside Colorado, Kansas and Utah, while TCU is already 0-1.
Kelly gets cut, then un-cut, in Green Bay
Nyjalik Kelly doesn't play for UCF anymore, but the pass rusher who racked up 22.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks in 4 years as a Knight is still giving the account plenty to brag about. Undrafted this spring, Kelly signed for a $265,000 guarantee from Green Bay — the largest guarantee ever given to an undrafted free agent in Packers history, per Yahoo Sports — then spent the preseason making the front office look smart: a sack and forced fumble against Denver, then a sack, 3 tackles for loss and an interception against Arizona, according to Heavy Sports.
The story took a twist this week. Kelly was among the Packers' final roster cuts on August 30, only for Green Bay to re-sign him to the practice squad the very next day, per multiple Packers beat reporters. It isn't the 53-man spot he was pushing for, but with Micah Parsons on the PUP list and Collin Oliver on injured reserve for at least the next 4 games, Green Bay is thin enough at edge that the practice squad may not hold him long.
Next up: the ACC road trip Frost was already thinking about
Frost's postgame caution wasn't for nothing — UCF heads on September 12 at Pittsburgh, an ACC opponent that opened its own season today at Acrisure Stadium against Miami (Ohio) behind sophomore quarterback Mason Heintschel, one of the more productive young passers in the country a year ago. It's a real step up in competition after a Bethune-Cookman team the Knights outgained by 379 yards, and it will say more about where this offense actually is than a 73-point night against an FCS opponent could.
Pittsburgh opened as an 8.5-point favorite, making UCF an underdog for the trip to Acrisure Stadium, with the total set at a middling 51.5. Barnett's clean debut bought this offense some benefit of the doubt, but Frost's own words suggest he knows this line is a fairer read on his team than Thursday's scoreboard was.
