Fall camp closed with Scott Frost demanding 'game mode' over 'camp mode' and Alonza Barnett III promising a 'clean and fast' offense from the opening snap — and Thursday night, both got exactly that. Barnett went 11 of 18 for 158 yards and a touchdown through the air, then added a 5-yard scoring run in the first quarter that helped UCF open a 21-0 lead, per Yahoo Sports. It was the first game action for the James Madison transfer since he led the Dukes to a College Football Playoff appearance a season ago, and it looked the part from the opening series.

Barnett wasn't perfect — Bethune-Cookman blitzed more than Frost expected, and Barnett threw an interception to go with the touchdown — but the head coach came away sounding like a man who'd found his guy. 'He's a competitor,' Frost said after the win, per Yahoo Sports. 'I really like going to battle with a guy that cares that much and is going to compete that hard.' Duke Watson, in off 10 career touchdowns at Louisville, turned his first-ever carry as a Knight into a 64-yard touchdown, and defensive back Jayden Williams turned a Tyler Jefferson interception into a 47-yard pick-six that the team's own account called the defensive play of the game.

He spent the preseason making the front office look smart: a sack and forced fumble against Denver, then a sack, 3 tackles for loss and an interception against Arizona, according to Heavy Sports.
The story got a twist this week. Kelly was actually among the Packers' final roster cuts on August 30, only for Green Bay to re-sign him to the practice squad the very next day, per multiple Packers beat reporters. It isn't the 53-man spot Kelly was pushing for, but it isn't a release either — with Micah Parsons on the PUP list and Collin Oliver on injured reserve for at least the next 4 games, Green Bay is thin enough at edge that the practice squad may not hold him for long. UCF hits the road on September 12 at Pittsburgh, with both programs sitting at 0-0 after their openers. The Panthers' season runs through sophomore quarterback Mason Heintschel, who threw for 2,354 yards and 16 touchdowns as a true freshman a season ago and enters as one of the more underrated arms in the sport, per SI's Pittsburgh coverage. Pitt is coming off a 17-23 loss at East Carolina last season, so this will be the first real look at what a full offseason with Heintschel running the offense looks like.
The game is at Acrisure Stadium, not the Bounce House, which makes it the first true road environment Barnett will see as a Knight after a debut spent entirely in front of a home crowd. There's no line on the board yet for this one, but after a night like Thursday's, UCF fans will take the matchup on its own terms before they ever check a number.
