This is a study in contrasts before it's anything else. UCLA fired DeShaun Foster after an 0-3 start last fall and went out and got Bob Chesney, who went 21-6 at James Madison over two years and made a College Football Playoff appearance. Chesney didn't just change the record on the door — he brought in 42 new players, including JMU standouts Wayne Knight and Sahir West, and landed the No. 25 transfer class in the country. Maryland took the opposite approach. Mike Locksley kept the band together, retaining 68% of last season's offensive production, the 17th-most in the country, after 2025 was a roster full of first-year Terps.
Quarterback Nico Iamaleava is staying in Westwood for year 2 under Chesney, and the new staff has made a point of saying he's grown as a leader after a 2025 that produced 1,928 yards, 13 touchdowns and 7 interceptions — numbers Chesney has openly called the product of a program that set him up to fail. Maryland's Malik Washington doesn't need a reclamation project. He set the school's freshman passing record with 2,963 yards and 17 touchdowns and now gets a new play-caller in Clint Trickett, who replaces Pep Hamilton as offensive coordinator.

That's the tension of this one: the Terps have continuity and a defensive identity, UCLA has a proven winner running the show and more talent than it had a year ago.
