This one is really about first-year head coaches trying to prove their hire was the right call. Kyle Whittingham left two decades of stability at Utah to take over Michigan, and by late November he'll have a full season of evidence on whether that program-builder reputation translates to Ann Arbor. Bob Chesney is doing the same thing at UCLA after leaving James Madison, except he's doing it with a roster that's been picked apart by APR issues and instability the last few years. A Friday night Big Ten game in November between these two says plenty about where each program stands.
Bryce Underwood enters his second year as Michigan's starter with a full offseason of work with QB coach Jordan Palmer behind him, plus a five-star running back in Savion Hiter and Utah transfer JJ Buchanan added to the skill group. UCLA counters with Nico Iamaleava, who Chesney has publicly backed as his guy, running an offense built by coordinator Dean Kennedy that's leaned on dual-threat quarterbacks wherever Chesney and Kennedy have coached. Michigan opens as the far more established side here, and the market reflects a program with a marquee hire and a QB entering year 2 versus one still figuring out its identity.
