The quarterback contrast is the whole story here. Dante Moore is back in Eugene after throwing for 3,565 yards and 30 touchdowns last season and leading the Ducks to a Peach Bowl semifinal appearance. Across the field is Nico Iamaleava, the former five-star who transferred in from Tennessee for 2025 and watched his first season at UCLA implode around him.
UCLA's 2025 was a disaster almost from the jump. The Bruins opened 0-3, including a 43-10 blowout loss to Utah in Iamaleava's debut, and the school fired DeShaun Foster before September was even over. Bob Chesney takes over now with a nearly rebuilt roster — 42 new players — and this trip to Oregon is about as tough a measuring stick as a first-year staff can get.

Oregon, meanwhile, isn't hiding its ambitions. Dan Lanning is in year five, the Ducks are being talked about anywhere from No. 2 to No. 6 in the country in preseason polls, and the entire starting defensive front — Bear Alexander, A'Mauri Washington, Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti — chose to run it back instead of testing the draft. That's the kind of returning production programs build championship runs around.

For UCLA, the appeal of this spot is that expectations are basically zero. There's no pressure narrative to live up to, just a new staff trying to find out what it has on the road against one of the sport's best fronts. Iamaleava still has the arm talent that made him a five-star recruit, and if Chesney's staff can give him a cleaner pocket than he had in 2025, there are flashes worth watching even in a lopsided environment.
Oregon's own question isn't talent, it's whether the turnover bug that hit Moore for 10 interceptions last year gets cleaned up. Against a UCLA defense still installing a new system, this is exactly the kind of game a loaded roster is supposed to put away early — but early-season trap games have bitten ranked teams before, especially with a rebuilding opponent that has nothing to lose.
