UCLA has earned its trip here. The Bruins are 4-0 for the first time since 2022, 2-0 in the Big Ten, and just went to Maryland and won 54-3. It was their biggest margin of victory since 2012, and the defense returned 2 interceptions for touchdowns. One caveat: that Maryland team has now lost 9 straight Big Ten games, so the score says as much about the Terps as it does about UCLA. The Bruins have hung 45 or more on 3 of their 4 opponents, and that kind of scoring travels.
Portland State84-0Oregon's 3-1 has more going on underneath it. The Ducks got past Boise State by only 7 at home, then gave up 39 in a loss at Oklahoma State. The 84-0 win over Portland State doesn't tell you much. The USC game was the most complete thing they've done: 504 yards on 68 plays, 7.4 yards a snap, points on 7 of 9 drives, and 2-for-2 on fourth down, most of it with the backup under center. The offense looks fine. The worry is a defense that has given up 27 or more to 3 of its 4 opponents, and now it faces a UCLA team that scores a lot.
UCLA has lost a receiver too. M. Matthews has been shut down for the season with a lower-leg injury, so both teams will be leaning on depth on the outside. Neither team plays again before this one, which gives Moore extra time to clear protocol and gives both staffs 2 weeks to prepare. The winner comes out of Autzen in good shape in the Big Ten race, and the loser has its first conference loss to explain.
