Rutgers is the opposite story: 0-2, having dropped the opener to UMass and then a road game at Boston College, and now walking into its first Big Ten test of the year without a settled answer at quarterback. Dylan Lonergan got hurt in that UMass loss and hasn't practiced since, which pushed true first-time starter AJ Surace into the Boston College game, where he threw for three scores but also four interceptions in his first career start.
Whether Lonergan is well enough to play changes this game more than anything in the four-touchdown spread does. Greg Schiano has called him probable, but a quarterback who couldn't practice all week and hasn't taken a real hit since going down is a different proposition than the one on the depth chart, and Surace's turnover-prone debut is the version Rutgers is bracing to lean on if Lonergan can't go.
