Bear Bachmeier isn't a mystery anymore. He took over as a true freshman who didn't even get to Provo until June, started all 14 games in 2025, and threw for 3,033 yards and 15 touchdowns against just 7 interceptions in a 12-2 season. He's the undisputed starter again, and he's got LJ Martin, the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, lined up behind him after a 1,305-yard season. Utah Tech, by contrast, is making just its second trip out as a full Big Sky member, coming off its Aug. 29 debut against Montana State before the quick drive up I-15 to Provo.
BYU's defense went through real change this offseason after coordinator Jay Hill left for Michigan, handing the keys to longtime assistant Kelly Poppinga. He's got real building blocks in linebacker Isaiah Glasker and safety Faletau Satuala, both mentioned as potential All-Americans, though Satuala's dealing with a foot injury that kept him out of player-run practices and figures to cost him time early in camp. Utah Tech, meanwhile, is working with what head coach Lance Anderson has called a very young roster after losing last year's top receiver and kicker to FBS transfers.
