Bachmeier went 16-of-20 for 198 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air, adding a rushing score of his own, and all of his passing damage came before the break. BYU's defense did its part too, forcing 4 turnovers and holding Utah Tech to just 184 total yards on the day.
With the game decided by halftime, BYU's staff pulled back on the starters and let the bench finish the job. Devaughn Eka added a physical, pylon-diving touchdown run to push the Cougars past 60 points, and a freshman receiver scored 3 times on his first 4 career touches — the kind of debut that gets a fan base excited about depth even in a laugher.
There isn't much to take from Utah Tech's side of this one. The Trailblazers managed a lone touchdown in the third quarter and were outgained by more than 300 yards, the expected outcome when a program at that level travels into a ranked Big 12 team's building.
For BYU, the bigger story is the health of the roster heading into a real Big 12 slate. Getting Bachmeier and the rest of the first-string offense out by the second half is exactly the kind of night a team hopes for in a season opener — production without exposure.
