TLDR: UTSA just put up 59 points on Colorado State. Now the Roadrunners head to Houston to see if a rebuilding Rice team can do what the Rams couldn't and keep the scoreboard sane.

UTSA comes to Houston off a 59-45 win over Colorado State with Owen McCown running one of the more productive offenses in the American, while Rice is in year 2 of Scott Abell's rebuild with 53 newcomers on the roster. The Roadrunners are a double-digit road favorite on the board. The things that could make it close are UTSA's own habits, a heavy penalty rate and a defense that just allowed 45, plus a hot, possibly wet night at Rice Stadium.

UTSA Roadrunners
  • Offense scored 45+ in 2 of 4 games
  • McCown multi-TD games vs UTRGV and Texas State
  • Won a road rivalry game on late 4th downs
  • 115 penalty yards per game early, 2nd-most nationally
  • Allowed 45 to Colorado State at home
  • Short week follows: USF on Thursday, October 8
Rice Owls
  • Home game on familiar turf in Houston heat
  • Quinton Jackson moved to WR, a veteran playmaker
  • Abell's system now has a roster built for it
  • 53 newcomers, still figuring out the depth chart
  • Can't win a shootout against this UTSA offense

UTSA's season so far has gone 45-16 over UTRGV, a 31-26 comeback at Texas State, a 30-6 loss at Texas, and then a 59-45 shootout win over Colorado State at the Alamodome. Owen McCown runs the offense for Jeff Traylor, who is in his 7th year, and outside of the Austin trip that offense has scored on just about everybody. Rice gets the next shot on Saturday, October 3, and this is the next game on the schedule for both teams.

Rice is in year 2 under Scott Abell, and the roster shows it: 51 returners and 53 newcomers, rebuilt around what Abell wants to run. One of the bigger changes is Quinton Jackson, a redshirt senior who has been one of the Owls' most productive players, moving from running back to receiver. Abell has also said he plans to play a lot of guys this fall, which is how a program in its 2nd year of a rebuild figures out who it has. The board has UTSA as a double-digit road favorite, which tells you how the market sees the gap.

The weakness UTSA hasn't fixed is the flags. Through 2 games the Roadrunners were averaging 115 penalty yards a game, 2nd-most in the country. Against a thin Rice roster a team can survive that. It's also the most likely way a double-digit road favorite ends up in a closer game than it planned on. Then there's the Colorado State game: UTSA scored 59, but the defense gave up 45 at home in the same game.

For Rice, the job is simple to say and hard to do: shorten the game. The Owls don't have to match UTSA score for score. They need long possessions, a few 3rd-down conversions, and Jackson getting touches in space so McCown stays on the sideline. If Rice gets dragged into another 50-point shootout like the one UTSA just had, the Owls probably don't have the offense to keep up.

The Houston forecast is 91 degrees with a 54% chance of light rain and a 7 mph wind, which is typical early October on the Gulf Coast. Heat and a wet ball make it harder for both offenses to play clean, and the forecast is still 6 days out. UTSA's schedule matters too: the Roadrunners host South Florida on Thursday, October 8, so they'll be on a short week right after this one.

UTSA is the more talented team with the more dangerous quarterback, and it has scored at will against everyone except Texas. What Rice has going for it is that UTSA's penalty problem and leaky defense can keep a game closer than it should be. If the Roadrunners play clean, this one should be over early. If they don't, Rice will have a chance.
