UTSA still owns this rivalry on paper, but Texas State has won two in a row and rides a 4-game win streak into San Marcos looking to make it three.

Texas State enters with real momentum - 3 straight regular-season wins plus a bowl blowout - and a returning dual-threat QB in Brad Jackson who already has a full season of starts under his belt. UTSA's lack of a settled quarterback picture this deep into the offseason is the kind of uncertainty that shows up early in a season, especially in a rivalry game known for chaos. Take the Bobcats to win at home.

UTSA
  • leads all-time series 5-2
  • Traylor is 53-26 at UTSA, best win pct in school history
  • brutal historic homefield edge at Alamodome
  • lost last two meetings in this rivalry
  • no publicly settled starting QB this offseason
  • 2026 slate adds Texas and Colorado State nonconference
Texas State
  • won last two meetings vs UTSA
  • closed 2025 on a 4-game win streak incl. bowl rout of Rice
  • Brad Jackson and top-2 WRs all returning
  • started 2025 just 3-6 before turnaround
  • jumping to Pac-12 brings new travel and competition level
  • starting running back situation unsettled after Pare, Burrell exits

Jeff Traylor's Roadrunners have been the model program in this series, and UTSA still leads the all-time I-35 Rivalry 5-2. But recent history tells a different story. Texas State has flipped the last two meetings, and quarterback Brad Jackson returns for his sophomore year after taking the job in fall camp last August and running Kinne's offense as a legit dual-threat weapon.

The Bobcats bring back their top 2 receiving targets in Beau Sparks and Chris Dawn Jr alongside Jackson, giving them real continuity at the skill positions heading into a new league. UTSA, meanwhile, hasn't settled its quarterback picture publicly yet, and this early in the season a confirmed starter isn't locked in. That's the swing factor in a rivalry game that's produced some of the wildest scores in either program's history.

Texas State closed 2025 on a heater, winning its final 3 regular-season games to get bowl eligible before blowing out Rice 41-10 in the Armed Forces Bowl. That's a 4-game win streak walking into this one. UTSA finished 7-6 too, but went just 4-4 in conference and now steps into a 2026 slate that includes Texas and Colorado State in nonconference play alone.

This is also Texas State's Pac-12 debut season, and that jump looms over everything the Bobcats do this fall. Backfield questions linger too: Lincoln Pare is done at running back, and the presumed heir apparent, Greg Burrell, is reportedly off the team, so San Marcos will need answers at running back before conference play even starts. None of that changes the floor Jackson and the passing game give them for this specific matchup.

UTSA's counterpunch is simply program continuity. Traylor is 53-26 at UTSA with a .671 winning percentage, the best mark in school history, and the Alamodome record under him borders on absurd. San Marcos has been the tougher venue for the Roadrunners historically, and this rivalry doesn't need extra juice to get chippy - the 2020 meeting alone was a 51-48 double-overtime classic.

Whichever way the scoreboard tilts on Saturday, September 12, expect this one to be decided by whichever team's quarterback situation is actually settled by kickoff. Texas State has that answer locked in; UTSA is still working on it.
