UTSA opens its 16th season with a soft-looking home date, but there's more juice here than a typical FBS-FCS opener. UTRGV went 9-3 in its 2025 inaugural campaign, the best debut by an FCS program since the FCS/FBS split in 1978, and did it while going a perfect 7-0 at Vackar Stadium. Traylor, meanwhile, has UTSA at 53-26 over six seasons and six straight bowl trips, and this opener comes right before a brutal stretch that includes Texas, Navy and defending American champ Tulane. San Antonio needs to handle business here before that gauntlet starts.
The sideline subplot is real: UTRGV head coach Travis Bush was on UTSA's offensive staff from 2010-2012, so Saturday, September 5 at the Alamodome doubles as a homecoming for him. His Vaqueros bring a legitimate weapon in QB Eddie Lee Marburger, who threw 5 touchdowns in the program's first-ever game and helped UTRGV pull off a road upset of eventual SWAC champion Prairie View A&M last season. This is the first time UTRGV has ever lined up against a true FBS opponent, so there's no direct precedent for how the level jump plays out.

Where this settles is mostly about depth and class gap rather than scheme. UTSA has FBS bodies up front and a head coach with a track record of not sleepwalking through openers, while UTRGV is trying to do something no version of this program has ever done. Worth watching either way.
