Louisville's home opener isn't much of a guessing game on paper, but a Friday night under the lights at L&N Stadium still means something for a Cardinals team with real 2026 expectations.

Jeff Brohm is heading into year 4 in Louisville off a 9-4 season, and the vibes around the program are as good as they've been in a while. The Cardinals bring back running back Isaac Brown, who ran for 884 yards at an absurd 8.8 yards per carry in 2025, and pair him with Keyjuan Brown, who averaged 7.3 yards a pop himself. New starting quarterback Lincoln Kienholz doesn't have much experience in this offense yet, which matters because Louisville gave up 25 sacks a year ago -- but against an FCS defense that lost six of its top eight tacklers, that shouldn't be the story of this one.
Villanova, for its part, isn't walking into this completely overwhelmed on name recognition. The Wildcats went 12-3 last season, made the FCS semifinals for the first time since 2010, and bring back leading rushers Ja'Briel Mace (946 yards, 11 TDs) and Isaiah Ragland (755 yards). The problem is almost everything else. Villanova's still waiting on an NCAA waiver ruling for quarterback Pat McQuaide, and if it doesn't come through, none of the other quarterbacks on the roster took a single snap for the program last season. The receiving corps lost its top two options, and the offensive line that has to spring Mace and Ragland ranked 103rd nationally in run-blocking a year ago.

There's already a data point on how this level of jump tends to go for Villanova. The bigger question for the Cardinals isn't whether they win, it's whether Kienholz and this offensive line look sharp doing it, since that tells you more about how they hold up once ACC play starts.

For Villanova, the season-long story matters more than this particular scoreline. Mark Ferrante has built a genuine FCS power, and this Louisville trip was circled less as a game to win and more as a measuring stick before Patriot League play gets going. A competitive showing, even in a loss, would say plenty about where this program stands with so many new faces on defense and, potentially, under center.
