Miami's skill-position continuity — Mensah, Barkate, Toney and Fletcher all coming back — makes the Hurricanes the safer moneyline play against a Virginia Tech team that's still figuring out its identity under a first-year starting quarterback. The Hokies' transfer haul is legitimately impressive, but asking an unproven QB to win on the road against a CFP-caliber roster is a tall order for backing the upset.

James Franklin didn't take over a finished product. Virginia Tech went 3-9 in 2025, and the roster he inherited needed an overhaul from top to bottom. He got one: the Hokies brought in 27 transfers, reunited with a dozen former Penn State players, and by most accounts built one of the ACC's better transfer classes this offseason. The starting job at quarterback goes to Ethan Grunkemeyer, Franklin's backup at Penn State, with North Carolina transfer Bryce Baker and four-star freshman Troy Huhn behind him. It's a lot of new pieces to have humming by late November, and Miami on the road is about as tough a test as there is.
Miami isn't rebuilding anything. The Hurricanes are coming off a run to the national title game and return the kind of skill-position group most programs would kill for: quarterback Darian Mensah, who threw 34 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions in an ACC title season at Duke before transferring, plus 1,000-yard rusher Mark Fletcher and 1,000-yard receivers Cooper Barkate and Malachi Toney. The defense returns six starters and added Missouri pass-rush transfer Damon Wilson II. Mario Cristobal built this team to contend for a playoff spot again, not to have a letdown at home.

This series used to actually matter. Virginia Tech and Miami played annually as Big East rivals before the ACC's realignment, and Miami still leads the all-time series 27-15. The rivalry lost some juice when divisions went away in 2023, but the ACC restored it as a permanent yearly matchup starting in 2024 — and last year's meeting was a reminder of where the programs currently stand, with Miami winning 34-17 in Blacksburg.
